An Interview with Hudson: A Local Spirit from Toowoomba (Deceased 126 Years)

Interviewed by: Venerable Hai Yuan

Date: 10th February 2026

"

My name is Hudson, and I am a spirit living in Toowoomba, Australia. I have been dead for nearly 126 years. Back then, this area was still a vast stretch of grassland—you could say it was a wilderness.

I was the child of a British father and a local Indigenous mother, which was quite special. At the time, I possessed both my father’s tall stature and my mother’s beauty. From my name, you can tell I am male; I was handsome and drew a lot of attention.

My personality held my mother’s natural affinity for the outdoors and my father’s polite manners. He had been invited to Toowoomba by a British employer to work on land development, which is how he met my mother. She was young and beautiful then—even when I passed away, she was still quite young!

I am proud of my parents. My father was respected by the local Indigenous people because he always spoke to them with a kind smile. I remember some of the other British folk who came here weren't at all polite to the Indigenous community; they looked at them with contempt and arrogance. But my father wasn't like that, which is why he caught my mother’s eye. At the time, our family was protected by the British, but we were also protected by the Indigenous people, as they considered my mother a woman of good fortune.

I grew up under my father’s guidance and was a Catholic; it was our lifelong reliance. I was a gentle, polite child, but I was frail and sickly from a young age, though I managed to live into my twenties. I never married because of my poor health; I didn't want to burden the next generation. I died from heart disease, and while my passing brought sorrow to my parents, I left with a smile. I didn't have any loose ends; I simply left the world filled with love.

I was sent off with a Catholic ceremony. It has been over a hundred years since then—the number "126" just popped into my head, and I know it must have been the compassionate Namo Amituofo telling me. That is the age of an old man! My soul has remained very clear-headed since I passed. I know that later, my father took my mother back to England, as that was his home country. They left me here because I was born, raised, and died here, spending my entire life cycle of birth, ageing, sickness, and death in this place.

Being a spirit here, I know that many Catholics are buried in the cemetery after their funeral. After many, many years, their families might move away, and they become spirits of the cemetery. Without family, they essentially become lonely spirits—which is what I am now!

I have no family here, but I am not lonely because there are many other spirits like me. We are companions and keep the personalities we had when we were alive. Most spirits still have a kind heart and a hope for God. But to be honest, in 126 years, I haven't seen God or the Light. I felt a bit disappointed, but I got used to it. I just contentedly stay with the other lonely spirits. We are all very kind! We don't harm people or try to scare them. We see what people are doing, but we don't interfere.

I never thought about attaching to anyone. I know many spirits attach themselves to humans to suck their "Qi" (Energy)—absorbing their energy just to survive. But I feel there is natural energy in the air already; I don't need much, so I have no need to possess anyone.

But why have I appeared now through this lady, Miss Wang Min-jie (Jade Wang)? It is quite a unique story.

One day, a good friend of mine—another lonely spirit—and I were drifting along when we floated into a hospital. To be honest, it didn't feel great in there; there were so many spirits! I never intended to go in, but my friend said a relative of his was ill and he wanted to visit, so he asked me to come along. I told him, "You are a spirit now, and they are human. They won't even recognise you."

He said, "It doesn't matter, let's just go."

As it turned out, the hospital was packed with spirits; some were even layered on top of one another. Many were patients, but there were also spirits of doctors and nurses. We passed right through them. That’s when I saw a woman who had a faint light glowing from her. We could sense that only people with a truly kind heart emit such a gentle glow. I watched her from a distance and saw how patient and good she was to the patients. Perhaps it was destiny, but I decided to follow her.

About ten years have passed since that time. Initially, I simply stayed by her side, but I soon realised that some of the spirits entering her body weren't very friendly. They made her feel exhausted and caused her legs to ache. So, I entered her body myself, settling in her legs to help drive those spirits away. I wanted her to have more strength to help more patients. Since then, I haven't left her legs.

Being there, I came to know that her parents are truly good people; that is why they raised such a kind child. The person I knew as Miss Su back then was her mother. I saw how vast her heart was; she guided Ms Wang Min-jie's (Jade) growth and taught her so many things. I also saw them come to Toowoomba to buy land and build what eventually became the temple known as Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. Many people and monks live here. Everything they do is for the benefit of the spiritual world and for the good of humanity. They have quietly done so many good deeds.

Most importantly, there is a Buddha here named Namo Amituofo. There are also many bright, virtuous beings who are also spirits, but they emit a brilliant light—they are completely different from us lonely spirits. We discovered that their hearts are focused on caring for all sentient beings; it is because of this expansive heart that they radiate such light. It is a completely different level of compassion compared to us or average spirits, who usually only look after ourselves.

This is what I saw in Miss Su and Miss Wang. The person we now revere as Practitioner Su is just like that. Whenever Ms Wang is with Practitioner Su, we can feel the compassion radiating from her. We have also witnessed the deliverance ceremonies at the temple. I had never before seen anyone leave the world of darkness through Practitioner Su's Chao Du [𝑠𝑝𝑖𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙 𝑑𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒: 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑎𝑐𝑡 𝑜𝑓 ℎ𝑒𝑙𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑠𝑝𝑖𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑠 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑠𝑢𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑐ℎ 𝑎 𝑏𝑒𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒] and the guidance of Namo Amituofo. Her ability to deliver little demons and even more powerful dark entities is truly impressive. In our world, there are also malevolent spirits; we usually stay far away from them because encountering them brings only pain. Yet, Practitioner Su has a heart large enough to embrace and subdue them, ultimately saving them. This is something we never imagined or encountered before. This must be the heart of a Buddha.

I once asked my God in my heart if He was also traveling everywhere to save His people just like Practitioner Su, but I received no response. I also asked other lonely spirits if they had ever seen anyone like Practitioner Su, or a being like Namo Amituofo whose light is so vast and who has the power to save so many. They all said they had never encountered such a thing.

Through Miss Wang, we saw how Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su save sentient beings, and it made us realise that we also need to be saved. That is why we are taking this opportunity to come forward and leave her body. Many spirits—what you call attached spirits [spirits attaching to a person's body]—and even local deities from Toowoomba are willing to come out. Some deities are attached to people and originally have no intention of leaving. But whenever Miss Wang attends a Dharma assembly (The Thrice Yearning Ceremony), our hearts are moved because we see so many souls and spirits heading toward the Buddha-light of Namo Amituofo. Gradually, the place Namo Amituofo holds in my heart has replaced the place of my God. I discovered that when the Buddha-light shines on Miss Wang, it shines on us too, bringing light to all the beings within her.

I believe that following the Buddha-light of Namo Amituofo will lead us to our next home. Perhaps it is the Western Pure Land; that is my heart's greatest hope.

I am so grateful to Namo Amituofo for giving me the chance to speak my mind. I also want to thank Practitioner Su—you have saved so many beings in the spiritual world. Especially the local spirits from Brisbane, Queensland, and Toowoomba; the ghosts from the cemeteries, many Indigenous spirits, and the souls from aged care homes. Even the spirits of kangaroos, cattle, and horses have been saved by you. They are all so grateful. We watched as Practitioner Su delivered them, stripping away their "animal or insect suits" to reveal their original human forms. We were especially shocked the first time we saw ants shed their outer forms to look just like humans! Who knew such a thing was possible? We thought an ant died an ant and a cow died a cow. We had never seen ants, cows, kangaroos, snakes, or mice transformed back into human shapes. This must be the power of the Dharma.

If only more Australians and people around the world knew about the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, how wonderful that would be! Their souls could find the light and reach the bright Buddha-land—a permanent reliance—rather than remaining as ghosts in a cemetery.

I hope any Australians or others who see this interview will come and visit the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Goombungee, Toowoomba. This is a place where everyone's soul can truly belong.

I know the website is being reorganised by Joshua, who is also from Toowoomba. Joshua, you are so lucky to be helping Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su. If you do a good job with the website to let the world and Australia know about the good work done here, it will save so many people and spirits. It is such a meaningful task. I believe one day you will also have the chance to reach the bright Western Pure Land—the place I am hoping to go now.

I hope everyone takes a look so they can learn about the things many Australians don't know. Like the severe water shortage a few years ago; the rain that finally ended the drought was requested by Practitioner Su through prayer—I experienced this personally.

There are also the Namo Amituofo billboards that Practitioner Su set up in Brisbane. Many spirits saw those billboards and learned about the temple, coming here to be delivered. It makes me so happy because I’ve seen lonely spirits I used to know among those being saved.

I am leaving with a smile and a heart full of gratitude. I hope Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su can grant my wish to go to the Western Pure Land, and I hope many more suffering souls can be saved.

Namo Amituofo.

Hudson, a local spirit from Toowoomba
