Part 7: Pure Land Practices - Living the teachings of Namo Amituofo

In the Pure Land School, we cultivate kindness and purity, following in the footsteps of the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and great masters.

What do we practice?

Below is a summary of key practices that Pure Land practitioners are encouraged to cultivate in daily life—a translated reflection by Practitioner Xia Lian Ju (Original text: https://amtbpureland.cc/0Q0va)

PART 1:

 Loving-Kindness, Compassion, Joy, and Equanimity

The Four Immeasurable Minds

Loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity are the Four Immeasurable Minds. They benefit both humans and heavenly beings, bringing the fruits of the heavenly path.

Each of these minds is boundless—Boundless loving-kindness, boundless compassion, boundless joy, boundless equanimity. Each one helps to counter the roots of suffering. Their benefits are immeasurable—both for oneself and for all beings.

  • Loving-kindness brings happiness to sentient beings.

  • Compassion rescues beings from suffering.

  • Joy is a precious quality—boundless joy can dispel the ignorance and afflictions that cloud the hearts of beings.

  • Equanimity lets us release what others cannot let go of—

letting go of greed, anger, ignorance, arrogance, and doubt;

letting go of attachment to wealth, sensuality, fame, food, and sleep.

Through complete letting go, we find the freedom and clarity of emptiness.

By letting go of the causes of the three lower realms, we are free from their results.

Those who realise their true nature embody these Four Immeasurable Minds. Buddhas, fully awakened ones, embody them completely.

Loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity are the measure of the heart. They reveal a mind that is vast, inclusive, and wise.

Those who embody these qualities are able to embrace others with understanding.

They are expressions of inner character and virtue—natural qualities arising from the nature of mind itself. They are present in daily life, in how we treat others, in every interaction.

People are naturally drawn to those who live with loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity.

Let all four kinds of disciples cultivate these Four Immeasurable Minds—in practice, and in daily life.
