The Hidden Past of a Modern Visionary

This interview was recorded on February 22, 2018, by Chief Writer Shi Faxi at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. It features the spirit of the entrepreneur Ma Yun, who sought deliverance and clarity regarding his past lives and his current spiritual trajectory.

Venerable Faxi: Ma Yun, you once walked this world as the great Master Faxian, spreading the Buddha’s teachings. Namo Amituofo.

Ma Yun speaks:

"Master Faxian? I, Ma Yun, never imagined that I could have such a side to me—such a dignified and noble identity. Hearing this, my heart seems to resonate with something deep within. Why is it that I feel this sudden, overwhelming urge to weep?"

"I have always considered myself to be incredibly strong. I never shed tears in front of others, and I have always preferred to accomplish things entirely on my own. But now that you mention it, I realise that I have always had a deep-seated desire to share my experiences with others. I have always wanted to help guide people toward a brighter path, using the lessons I have learned to mentor the younger generation. I have delivered countless speeches in various formats over the years. It turns out that all of these actions were rooted in the Causal Conditions of my past. Today, I am truly astonished to learn the truth behind these inclinations."

The Weight of a Forgotten Responsibility

"I finally understand what it means to be spreading Dharma, and I realise that I have a responsibility to do so. Previously, I felt that such a calling was far removed from my own life, completely disconnected from my social circles and my personal interests. I am also acutely aware that my current character and conduct are vastly different from that past life. I feel a profound sense of shame when I reflect on the myriad changes that occur throughout the cycle of being reincarnated, and how I have been sinking into the Five Desires and the Six Dusts of this world."

"However, if I am truly able to play a part in this opportunity, I should also contribute my strength to protect and uphold the Buddha’s teachings. Now that I have come to know my own past, my heart has finally found a sense of true peace and meditative concentration. It feels as though there is a shadow of a monastic within me now. To be honest, this feeling is truly wonderful."
