On the thirtieth of July, 2017, the disciple Fa Xi respectfully invited and Practitioner Su to provide guidance. The disciple sought to understand a difficult question: Why is it that even among those who are engaged in spiritual practice, some still experience the of suffering within the hells? With deep gratitude for the Buddha's boundless , the disciple humbly requested an explanation.
Namo Amituofo provided the following teachings:
It is indeed as you suspect. When the spirit becomes dim and scattered, and when one’s heart is filled with subtle, turbulent ripples of thought, the laws of and cause and effect begin to weigh the merits and demerits of one's actions. At the time of reckoning, the soul is brought into the hall of judgment to answer for its deeds. Once the trial is concluded, the appropriate punishment is meted out according to the severity of the sins committed.
Within the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre, where true practice takes place, the karmic burdens are often lightened through the power of the . However, for those outside this protective environment, the reality of these trials is difficult to imagine. Through the process of , we invite those spirits currently suffering in the hells to receive the Dharma, and only then can these sentient beings be saved.
Most people in the world are entirely unaware of the reality of these hellish retributions. While they sleep, their spirits are subjected to nightly trials, leaving them exhausted and confused upon waking. The experiences of these souls vary, depending on the nature of their transgressions:
Whether the soul is subjected to direct punishment or is simply returned to its physical body in a state of exhaustion, the judgment of the King of the Underworld remains absolute. The soul often feels scattered, lacking vitality, and unable to focus its spirit.
The fundamental reason for this suffering lies in the failure to change one's ways. Many practitioners have made vows and pledges before the Buddha, yet they have broken their sincerity time and again, or have allowed themselves to stray from the right path. If you hold a position of responsibility, you must act with integrity and follow the path of the Dharma. Do not be foolish or mistaken in your duties. If you are asked, "What is your crime?" you must be able to answer with a clear conscience.
When you see others suffering, you must ask yourself: "Why am I not in the same position?" By pointing out the subtle merits and demerits of your actions, the Buddha helps you adjust your cultivation, cleanse your heart, and move toward the status of a sage. To achieve this, you must strictly correct your behaviour.
Spiritual practice is of the utmost importance. You must maintain a pure heart and a clean spirit. The universe is filled with the echoes of our past karma. Only by replacing our karmic burdens with sincere vows can we find true fairness and balance. In the halls of the underworld, the scales of justice weigh our merits and demerits; there is no escaping the truth, and no room for falsehood.
The eyes of heaven and earth are upon us, and the rewards and punishments are clear. Therefore, you must present your sincerity. Do not dismiss even the smallest of faults, and strive to perform only acts of Goodness. Because many people have deep karmic roots, they suffer many retributions. You must seek repentance with true devotion and serve the universe without a trace of selfishness. This is the essence of true practice.
The path of the Great Dharma is clear, yet the world remains in darkness, and many spirits wander in confusion. Only through the aid of the Great Dharma and the light of the Buddha can these suffering spirits find clarity. Do not cling to your private desires, for a single life is not worth the price of such suffering. Understand the reality of the underworld, and have compassion for the suffering spirits. This is the true vow of Namo Amituofo. You must learn to share this same compassion, for only by being in sync with this vast heart can you truly leave the cycle of rebirth behind.
