Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju
Recorded and transcribed by ’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
In the ancient systems of calculation from India, the term 'Immeasurable Great Number' represents the absolute largest unit of measurement. It is a concept that transcends our conventional understanding of quantity, for there is simply no number that can surpass it. But what does it truly mean to exist within such an immeasurable scale?
Consider the air that surrounds us. Although it appears to be formless and colourless, it is, in reality, teeming with countless beings. Within the air, there are infinite dust particles and diverse molecular structures, all existing in a state of constant motion. This is the essence of the Immeasurable Great Number. When we look out into the vastness of the Realm, we find that space is not empty; rather, it is composed of infinite layers of space within space. Within these layers, there are countless beings. The entire vastness of the Dharma Realm is filled with these immeasurable spaces and beings, just as the dust of the earth and the spirits of the land exist in numbers that defy human calculation.
We often make the mistake of thinking that this environment exists only outside of ourselves. In truth, you are constantly residing within an environment of the Immeasurable Great Number, both externally and internally. Your own physical body is a microcosm of this infinite reality. The cells that make up your body are so numerous that they cannot be counted. Within your body, there are spaces within spaces, and within those cellular spaces, there are countless beings residing. Therefore, your body is not merely a physical vessel; it is a vast environment containing an Immeasurable Great Number of cellular spaces, each housing an Immeasurable Great Number of beings.
Furthermore, consider the pores of your skin. There are countless pores across your entire body, and each individual pore contains many layers of space. Within these microscopic spaces, there are also beings. Thus, your entire body is a living, breathing environment where an Immeasurable Great Number of beings exist. From this, we can clearly understand that our human bodies are themselves environments of the Immeasurable Great Number.
We are all situated within this environment of the Immeasurable Great Number. It is vital to realise that these beings and ourselves all possess the same life force, the same true self, and are fundamentally one entity. Although you have been fortunate enough to get a human body in this life, you must remember that throughout the infinite aeons of your spiritual life, you have also been a part of this Immeasurable Great Number, both within and outside of the bodies of others.
Because of this profound truth, you must treat all beings with genuine compassion. You should hold them in high regard, treating them with the utmost respect and courtesy. It is essential to remain humble and modest in your interactions, ensuring that every action you take is rooted in a sincere heart. This is the deep, underlying meaning of contemplating the Immeasurable Great Number. By understanding this, you will naturally move from confusion to , from wrong paths to the right path, and from impurity to purity. May you always keep this truth in your heart as you continue your journey of practice.
