This is a record of an interview with the spirit of Anita Mui, the legendary Hong Kong singer who sought deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. She now resides in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This account reflects upon her life and her journey to liberation. It was recorded by the chief writer, Li Jiaxian, on June 10, 2017.
Li Jiaxian speaks:
"I perform ten bows to the Buddha and respectfully invite the renowned Hong Kong singing sensation, Ms. Anita Mui, to speak. , in His great , created the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Through the compassion of Practitioner Su, Ms. Mui was delivered to this sacred realm. I humbly ask you to share the Causal Conditions that brought you to the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre and the process of your rebirth. Namo Amituofo."
Anita Mui speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. I am Anita Mui. Because of my family circumstances and my deep love for singing, I began performing on the streets with my family to make a living when I was just a child. As I grew older, I participated in many singing competitions. I was very fortunate to be signed by a record company, and they produced albums for me that became massive hits. From that moment on, I tasted the intoxicating flavour of fame.
My style was different from other singers; I was bold, wild, and glamorous. This unique persona allowed me to rise to stardom very quickly. I recorded a string of best-selling albums, and my management company began organising large-scale concerts for me. Almost every single one was sold out. At that time in Hong Kong, I was known as one of the 'three kings and one queen' of the music industry. I stood firm in the spotlight, releasing album after album, performing concert after concert. My life became so busy that I barely had a moment to myself.
Later, I wanted to transform and challenge myself, so I began accepting film roles. To my surprise, I became an overnight success in acting as well. My career in both music and film was incredibly smooth, but in my emotional life, I faced constant turbulence and heartbreak. Perhaps it is impossible to balance a career and a relationship perfectly. I wanted my career to shine brilliantly, yet I also greedily longed for a perfect, fulfilling romance. Instead, I was constantly wounded in love. Eventually, I poured all my heart into my acting and singing, and just as my career reached its absolute peak, my body began to signal a crisis.
I felt a persistent, bloating pain in my abdomen. I went to the hospital for a check-up, and when I saw the report, it felt like a bolt of lightning from a clear sky: I had been diagnosed with cervical cancer. My heart plummeted to the very bottom. I was still so young—why would such a cruel illness find me? I could not stop the tears from flowing. The doctor urged me to undergo chemotherapy, but I refused. I was terrified of the thought of my hair falling out and becoming ugly; I could not bear to imagine that image. I chose to manage it with medication instead, and I became even busier with my large-scale concerts. On stage, amidst the dazzling lights and my glamorous costumes, I boldly showcased my figure and my voice. The audience below was mesmerised, cheering with such passion. I knew my time was running out, and I wanted to leave the most beautiful image possible for my loyal fans. I held concert after concert.
The most unforgettable moment for me was when Andy Lau came to my concert to present me with flowers. I was so moved! He has always been the person I admired most, and that moment is forever etched in my heart. I wanted to leave behind the most beautiful, radiant Anita Mui for my fans. I endured the agony of my illness and continued to perform on stage, but in the end, I could not overcome the destruction of the disease. I died of cervical cancer.
After I passed away, no one knew that I, Anita Mui, was suffering retribution in the Digging Intestine Hell. You might ask, why would I go to the hells? In the entertainment industry, if you want a smooth path, it depends on two things: luck and connections. The dark secrets of the industry are only known to those within it. To achieve such fame, I had to endure many helpless situations. At the time, I asked myself, deep in my heart, I had the ambition to be a superstar across Southeast Asia, to be an eternal icon. I held some incorrect thoughts, and because of this, in my dreams, one of my souls and two of my spirits were pulled away by my . Although I was a massive star, my emotional life was a disaster. I often dreamt of longing for someone to love and protect me, yet I was terrified of losing them, so I clung to them tightly. Another one of my souls and one of my spirits were also pulled away. When I was at the peak of my career, knowing I had cancer, I could not bear to leave the fans who supported me. In my dreams, I would be singing loudly, seeing a sea of people packed so tightly that not even a drop of water could pass through, but in the blink of an eye, my fans would all vanish. I would scream, 'Where have you all gone?' At that moment, all three of my spirits were pulled away. My condition worsened, and I died of cancer. Because of my misguided thoughts and ambitions, I descended into the hells to suffer retribution. The pain was unbearable. Sometimes I would scream, 'Who can save me?'
One day, someone suddenly shouted, 'Anita Mui, Anita Mui, where are you?' A beam of light guided me to the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. When I arrived, I saw Practitioner Su. Her face was filled with compassion, and she asked me, 'Are you Anita Mui?' I replied that I was. Practitioner Su invited me to the -Nature Land at the Centre to listen to the sutras. Only after listening to the teachings did I realise that the reason I contracted cancer was because of karmic creditors I had harmed in a past life. Because of my impure thoughts, they found me. This goes back to about six lifetimes ago. My father was an official, and I was selected to be a consort in the palace. To survive in the inner palace, one had to be full of deceit and flattery just to secure a place. To consolidate my own position, I secretly harmed many unborn fetuses. The internal fighting of that palace was truly too tragic to witness. I was polluted by that environment and committed many heinous acts. Today, it was my own impure thoughts that triggered those past karmic creditors to find me, pulling away my souls and spirits, which led to my cancer. Looking back now, I see my past cruelty and the retribution I am suffering today. I must repent for my spiritual obstacles. I am so sorry for the evil I created in the past; I am so sorry to the beings I harmed. Namo Amituofo is so compassionate; He can even guide the beings I harmed to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
Li Jiaxian asks: 'Ms. Mui, what great did you cultivate in your past lives to be so incredibly famous in this lifetime?'
Anita Mui speaks: 'About three lifetimes ago, I was a child bride. From a young age, I took care of the young master, looking after his daily needs, and bringing him to his private school. He was handsome and upright, and I knew he treated me well, like an older sister. I also knew he had many admirers outside, and they were all more beautiful than I was. I could not compare to them, and I dared not hope for anything more. I could only silently stay by his side to serve him, and that was enough to make me content. The master and mistress treated me like their own daughter, but the young master had far too many confidantes, and he was constantly changing them. One day, because of the jealousy of one of his confidantes, the young master lost his life. The master and mistress were heartbroken, and I cried until my tears ran dry. Ever since the young master died in that accident, the master and mistress lived in constant sorrow. Before they passed away, they left all their family assets to me. In truth, I did not crave this wealth; I only wanted to serve the young master and his parents as I did before, living a happy life. I slowly began to see the joys and sorrows of the world as fleeting, and I wished to become a nun. So, I sold all the family assets, donated them to temples, and helped the poor, then I became a nun. The reason I was so famous in this lifetime is because of the great blessings I gained in that previous life by selling all my assets to help the poor and making offerings to the temples. Although I gained these great blessings and tasted the life of a superstar, earning so much money, when my life ended, I could not take a single cent with me. I only brought my karma with me to suffer retribution. I am so grateful to Practitioner Su and the fourfold assembly of disciples at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. During the , Practitioner Su guided me to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, so I no longer have to suffer in the six realms of rebirth. I am eternally grateful.
I, Anita Mui, wish to appeal to my fans and my fellow countrymen in Taiwan and Hong Kong: please believe that this is the truth. There truly is a Namo Amituofo, and there truly is a Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Practitioner Su is compassionate and can guide the spirits of the deceased to the Western Pure Land. Those who truly practise must not doubt my words. Anita Mui speaks the truth; I do not speak falsely. Please, believe me! Namo Amituofo.'
Li Jiaxian speaks: 'Namo Amituofo. Thank you, Ms. Anita Mui, for accepting this interview.'
