In our daily lives, we often yearn for everything to proceed with smooth sailing. This desire for ease and harmony extends naturally into our spiritual practice as well. However, true smooth sailing is not found in external circumstances; it is found within the heart. If you wish to navigate the path of practice with ease, you must learn to adjust your heart and mind with skill and wisdom.
The ability to remain steady, regardless of how the winds of the external world may blow, is the true skill of the navigator. When your heart is settled and calm, you can steer your vessel through any conditions. This is the essence of meditative concentration. To achieve this, you must cultivate the following qualities:
We are especially fortunate to be here at Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. To receive the direct teachings and guidance from , our teacher, and Practitioner Su is a rare blessing. For any practitioner, this is an opportunity that is truly unprecedented. You have the unique privilege of being able to ask for guidance from the Buddha and Practitioner Su at any time. When you encounter obstacles on your path, you are never alone; you have the support needed to overcome them and continue your journey with smooth sailing.
Smooth sailing is not the absence of wind, but the ability to work with it. When you encounter the winds and waves of life, you must know how to adjust your sails. By lowering your speed and aligning yourself with the natural flow of the conditions, you can pass through challenges safely. Conversely, when you encounter a period of smooth progress, you must not become complacent. Always remain vigilant, for the winds and waves of the ocean can shift at any moment.
Regardless of the relationship between the wind, the waves, and your sails, your heart must remain the constant factor. You must be able to face whatever arises with a steady mind. Even when you encounter danger or obstruction, you must maintain your practice:
This is what it means to be a true practitioner of the Buddha's name. By anchoring your heart in Namo Amituofo, you will find that you can sail through the vast ocean of samsara with grace, security, and ultimate success.
