Why do practitioners encounter so many tests along their spiritual journey? It is because these challenges serve as essential tools to counteract our deep-seated habits, personal traits, and accumulated . If you can face these obstacles and break through them, your practice will have the opportunity to advance. This is because the very act of breaking through indicates that you have successfully identified the root of the problem. By applying the right methods—those that align with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way—you can resolve these issues, allowing your Body-Mind-Spirit to undergo purification and reach a higher level of clarity.
However, if a problem arises and you are unable to face it or find a resolution, the issue will remain. It will continue to linger, and you will inevitably encounter the same test again in the future. This cycle will persist until you finally pass the test and the problem is fully resolved.
In our practice, we encounter various forms of tests. These generally fall into three categories:
Demon tests are a significant part of this process. To navigate any of these tests, you must first recognise the fundamental nature of the suffering experienced by all beings. Only then will you be willing to let go of your arrogance, humble yourself, and sincerely admit and repent for your past mistakes. You must be willing to stand firm, refusing to be defeated by the circumstances that manifest before you, and instead, courageously face and take responsibility for your actions.
When a demon test arises, it often targets the aspects of your life that you find most difficult to manage. These tests frequently focus on what you feel is most painful or hurtful, what you love most dearly or are most attached to, what you find most repulsive or hateful, what triggers your deepest anger or intense longing, and the specific people, events, objects, or even animals that occupy your thoughts the most.
These tests challenge your stubborn personality and your unwillingness to compromise. They test whether you possess true meditative concentration and whether you can remain unmoved by external circumstances. If you can maintain a pure, thought-free state of mind, these illusory environments will naturally transform and dissolve. Once you have successfully navigated such an external situation, you will possess the meditative concentration to face similar challenges in the future. You will no longer create new causes that lead to suffering, thereby bringing a conclusion to that specific chain of the laws of karma and cause and effect. As the saying goes, the environment follows the mind; by transforming your mind, you transform your karma and your destiny.
If you lack meditative concentration, the problem remains unresolved. You will continue to be influenced by your environment, suffering the consequences of your actions and potentially even creating the karma that leads to the hells. When the situation inevitably arises again, you will still be required to face it. To truly succeed, you must cultivate the following qualities: selflessness, courage, repentance, a positive outlook, virtue, and compassion and Wisdom.
If you can internalise these virtues as a core part of your practice, you will be able to resolve any issue you encounter. This is the most effective method for overcoming any test that manifests on your path. .
