Understanding Namo Amituofo and the Forty-eight Great Vows
Whether you choose to enlarge your sense of self or shrink it, or even reach the state of , everything depends entirely upon your heart. How large or how small is ? It is a question that defines the trajectory of your entire spiritual life. In truth, the self can be as vast as the boundless universe, or it can be shrunk down to the size of a tiny, microscopic particle. This capacity for expansion or contraction is not a physical attribute, but a manifestation of the state of your heart.
In this world, people are naturally inclined to desire more. They find comfort in accumulation and are often driven by a deep-seated need to possess and be seen. This worldly tendency manifests in many ways:
Because of these attachments, people often feel a desperate need to enlarge their sense of self. They fear being ignored, overlooked, or forgotten. They build up their ego as a fortress, hoping that by making themselves larger in the eyes of others, they will find safety and significance. However, this is merely a cycle of grasping that leads to further suffering.
In contrast, the path of those who appear in the world to teach the emphasizes the beauty of being small and the power of having nothing. When you have no worldly burdens, your body and mind become light. When you have no dust of attachment, your entire being becomes pure. It is in the smallest, most humble places that one can truly awaken.
In your attitude and in how you conduct yourself in the world, the ability to shrink your self is a hallmark of genuine practice. Yet, simply shrinking the self is not enough. You must go further. You must learn to let go of the self entirely, until there is no self left to cling to. Only then can you be truly in sync with the state of no-self, and only then can you begin to experience the profound truth of the oneness of all beings.
Those who insist on enlarging their sense of self are inevitably burdened by a heavy sense of gain and loss. They are dominated by ego-attachment and rigid personal views. When things do not go according to their desires, they easily give rise to anger and resentment. These are the stains of the mind that you must work to remove. You must change your ways and purify your heart, for only a pure heart can reflect the light of the truth.
For those who have realised their true nature, the self has vanished. In this state of no-self, one cannot find a me to be harmed or offended. Because there is no ego for them to latch onto, the demon crowds cannot find you. Even the and the various beings who seek to settle past grievances find no target, for the self they once knew has dissolved into the purity of the Dharma. This is the most wonderful and effective method for maintaining purity and subduing the demons of the mind. By letting go of the self, you find the ultimate protection and the path to true peace.
