Selfishness is Suffering
To forget the past is not an act of negligence, but a deliberate choice to allow the present moment to awaken. When we release the heavy baggage of yesterday, we create the space necessary for our true nature to emerge, refreshed and clear. Through diligent practice and persistent effort, we break through the barriers that have long confined us. The reward for this struggle—the realisation of our true nature and the profound coolness of a liberated mind—is well worth every ounce of effort we invest.
To 'forget' is to bring the past to a complete standstill. This is a vital aspect of our practice. By doing so, we purify our and prevent the ripples of our thoughts and memories from spreading. If we allow these ripples to persist, they act as beacons, drawing our and the forces of the cycle of rebirth to manifest before us. Therefore, mastering the art of forgetting is essential for any serious practitioner.
Once you achieve the realisation of your true nature, everything from your past will be transformed. This change begins deep within the heart. By thoroughly transforming the very things you have chosen to forget, you convert them into positive Dharma affinity. From this point forward, your primary purpose becomes the salvation of all beings, helping them leave suffering behind.
After you realise your true nature, your emotions are no longer mere worldly attachments, but they remain as connections. These connections are transformed into Dharma affinity, elevating them to a higher level. Those who have realised their true nature naturally possess the Wisdom and virtuous capabilities required to transform all things.
Consider the attachments you once held—whether they were people, events, objects, emotions, kindnesses, or grievances. Even if they still exist in the world today, for you, they no longer carry the weight of attachment. You now view them with , for you understand that these are beings bound by . You recognise their spiritual nature, you see the impurity that clouds them, and you understand their inability to master their own destiny. Regardless of what has passed, it is best to simply forget and let go.
Returning everything to zero is the most excellent state. Zero is, in fact, the state of having everything. Emptiness is the gateway to the infinite. To be ignorant of worldly distractions is to possess true, all-encompassing Wisdom. This is the hallmark of one who has realised their true nature.
