What is meant by mind-capacity? It refers to the depth and breadth of the heart's ability to contain and encompass all things. It is a measure of how far your heart can reach, how much it can hold, and how deeply it can embrace the world around you. Regardless of how others perceive the world, or how they engage in the following habits, your mind-capacity is defined by your response:
Even when faced with the difficult personality traits, habits, or shortcomings of others, a true practitioner remains grounded in and wisdom. Your mind-capacity is measured by your ability to respect and embrace all beings with a selfless, attitude, regardless of the circumstances.
In contrast, the mind-capacity of most people is remarkably small. It can be as microscopic as an air molecule—something that cannot be seen, touched, or grasped. For many, the mind is as fine as a grain of sand or a speck of dust, fragile and weak. When we operate from the ego, our mind-capacity is restricted by our own self-interest. We draw a line in the sand, and our tolerance ends where our personal interests, rights, or comfort are challenged. If someone acts in a way that contradicts our personal habits or offends our ego, we immediately feel:
If these arise, it is a sign that the situation has exceeded the limits of our current mind-capacity. This is the state of the majority of people. They do not realise that this limited, ego-driven mind is the very engine of their cycle of rebirth. If you continue to act according to these small, selfish impulses, you are simply continuing to walk the path of samsara. Without the willingness to adjust your perspective and change your ways, it becomes nearly impossible to speak of true practice, the realisation of your original nature, or the hope of rebirth in the of Ultimate Bliss.
Conversely, a mind-capacity that has been fully cultivated is as vast as the great ocean and as boundless as the Realm itself. It possesses an infinite ability to contain and embrace all things without any need for selection or rejection. How large is your mind-capacity? It is exactly as large as the Buddha-land you can create. If your mind-capacity is infinite, then your Buddha-land is infinite.
Consider the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss established by . Consider the Dharma-Nature Land of Practitioner Su at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. These realms are designed to encompass every single being that enters them. No matter how many beings arrive—even if there are immeasurable and boundless numbers of them—the land never becomes full, and it never feels crowded. It remains as it has always been: vast, spacious, and without limits.
My dear children, you must take a moment to measure your own mind-capacity. How large is it? Is it sufficient to save the residing within your own body? Is it enough to save the fifty trillion cells that make up your physical form? You must first be able to break through your own personal ego, habits, and selfishness before you can truly save the karmic creditors and the trillions of cells within you.
You may ask: How do we save them? And where do we send them? Through the performed during our Dharma assemblies, we guide these beings to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss or to the higher realms of humans and heavenly beings. For Practitioner Su, sending beings to be reborn in the Western Pure Land is as natural as breathing. To the outside world, however, this is a rare and difficult thing to witness or understand.
Once you have measured your capacity against your own internal needs, look further. Is your mind-capacity large enough to save your family members and loved ones in this current life? Remember, if you have not first saved yourself, you cannot truly save those closest to you. Finally, look even further. Is your mind-capacity large enough to save all the beings you see, hear, know, and feel—those existing in the layers upon layers of space throughout the universe?
You are a being, I am a being, and they are beings. We are all one, existing in a shared, interconnected life. Even the immeasurable and boundless beings throughout the vastness of the Dharma Realm are beings who can be saved, who should be saved, and who are waiting to be saved. After you have taken the time to measure your own mind-capacity, what is the result? What have you discovered about the state of your heart? Reflect deeply on this, for your answer determines your future. This message was recorded by the Buddhist disciple Venerable HaiZe.
