Understanding Namo Amituofo and the Forty-eight Great Vows
Impermanence is the nature of change. Constancy, however, is the nature of that which does not change. In this world, we are constantly surrounded by shifting conditions and external circumstances. Yet, amidst this endless flux, there is a path for the practitioner to find stability.
In this human life, we are subject to the cycle of birth, aging, sickness, and death. Every minute and every second, time urges us toward old age and eventually toward death. Every moment is caught in this cycle of change, which leads us deeper into the cycle of reincarnation and dictates the conditions of our future lives.
For the practitioner, meditative concentration means that your Faith, Vows, and Practice remain steadfast. Your aspiration for rebirth in the of Ultimate Bliss must never waver, regardless of how the external world changes. This is the changeless core of your spiritual journey.
Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and those who have realised their true nature possess an infinite for all beings. Their vow to save others and help them leave suffering behind is a constant that never changes. It is a commitment that transcends time and space.
Why do we change? We are often restless and seek peace of mind. We are driven by desires that are never fully satisfied. Because we lack this inner stillness, we are easily swayed by the winds of change. We chase after fleeting comforts, only to find that they do not bring the lasting happiness we seek.
Why should we remain changeless? Because we have meditative concentration in our hearts. With the clarity of the Five Eyes, we can see the truth of reality. We respect the laws of and cause and effect. We no longer harbour doubt or arrogance. Our compassion arises, and our determination to seek the and realise our true nature remains firm. By saving ourselves and saving others, we will ultimately achieve rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
