During a routine maintenance task at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre, Venerable Shi Faxi encountered a vast multitude of spirits residing within the septic waste. These beings, trapped in a state of profound suffering, shared their harrowing experience with the Venerable. Venerable Shi Faxi began by asking, "May I ask where you have come from, and who you are?"
The spirits replied, "We are the septic waste itself. We have spent years lingering in this environment, which is filled with the foulest of odours. Some in the human world describe this as a miasma, but for us, it is our entire existence. No one enjoys such an environment, and no one likes this stench. Yet, we are forced to live within it, day after day, without respite."
Venerable Shi Faxi inquired further, "Why have you ended up in this state, trapped within the septic waste?" The spirits explained that their current condition was not a matter of choice, but a consequence of their past lives. They revealed that they were serving a sentence for the grave misdeeds they committed while in the human world. Upon death, they fell into the hells and were specifically sentenced to the Feces and Urine Hell. Now, they are further confined within the septic tanks of the human world, where countless other spirits also exist in a state of perpetual agony. They expressed that their suffering is beyond words, yet they find themselves completely unable to escape this cycle of torment.
When asked if they could provide examples of their past actions to serve as a warning to the world, the spirits spoke with deep regret. They listed the following transgressions that led to their current state:
They pleaded, "Because of these deeds, we have become this septic waste. Please, we beg you, save us. The suffering is simply too great to bear."
Moved by their plight, Venerable Shi Faxi invoked the boundless compassion of the Buddha. He prayed for the Buddha's blessing to assist these suffering spirits and encouraged everyone present to join in chanting the name of Namo Amituofo. He asked the spirits, "How many of you are there in this place?"
The spirits replied, "Our numbers are immeasurable and vast; there are far too many to count." One spirit, representing the group, identified himself as Qi Shangwen and expressed his profound gratitude for the opportunity to be heard and helped.
This encounter serves as a stark reminder of the laws of and the reality of the cycle of rebirth. Through the practice of , these spirits are being guided toward the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. A memorial tablet has been established for the countless spirits within the septic waste, gas, and space at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Australia, with Qi Shangwen representing them in their plea for spiritual deliverance, purification, and the restoration of their true nature. May they all leave suffering behind, find happiness, and be reborn in the Western Land of Nature, where they may finally find peace under the guidance of Namo Amituofo.
