The Buddha’s disciple, Shi Facie, reached out to the spiritual presence residing within the orchids placed upon the lecture table, seeking to understand the history and the Causal Conditions that had led these beings to their current form. The atmosphere was heavy with the weight of past lives and the silent, yearning cries of spirits seeking liberation.
When asked to identify itself and share its story, the spirit of the orchid seemed momentarily disoriented, as if waking from a long, dreamless slumber. It asked, "Who is calling me? Where am I? Who am I? What is this place?" It required a few moments of quiet reflection, looking toward its companion orchids still resting in silence, to begin piecing together the fragmented memories of a life long past. The spirit seemed to struggle with the transition, its flickering like a candle in the wind, before finally settling into the clarity of the present moment.
A Life Rooted in the Soil
The spirit eventually recalled a former life as a man named Huang Wanshan, who grew up in the mountainous regions of Wanli, Taiwan. His early years were defined by the simplicity of rural life and the heavy, unrelenting responsibilities of a youngest son. He spoke of his parents, his grandparents, and his elder sisters, and of the endless cycle of chores that filled his days. In those times, education was a luxury he never knew; he could not read or write, and his world was bounded by the vegetable garden and the demands of the farm. He lived a life of pure, unadorned labour, where the earth was his only teacher.
Every morning, the crowing of the rooster at five or six o'clock signalled the start of his arduous labour. He would tend to the vegetable patches, turning the soil, sowing seeds, spraying for pests, and harvesting crops. These tasks were second nature to him, etched into his very being. As he grew older, the burden of providing for his family weighed heavily upon his heart. At sixteen, driven by the desire to lift his family out of poverty, he heard rumours from a neighbouring village that one could strike it rich by cultivating flowers. Without consulting his parents, he left a note and followed the stream of hopeful villagers to seek his fortune, hoping to find a path to prosperity through the art of horticulture.
The Passion of a Flower Farmer
With the agility and determination of youth, he secured a position as a flower farmer. Though he lacked formal knowledge, he was filled with dreams of cultivating vast fields of beautiful flowers, hoping to earn enough to transform his family's living conditions. He dedicated himself to learning every aspect of his craft with a devotion that bordered on the sacred:

Among all the varieties, he developed a special affinity for orchids, drawn to their elegance, purity, and high value. He eventually specialised in them, creating diverse hybrids and colours. When he saw orchids that were discarded or appeared less vibrant, he felt a deep sense of pain, as if his own children were being mistreated. He would transplant them into his private garden, nurturing them until they bloomed once more. The fragrance of his garden became so potent that it could be smelled from a distance, and he found great solace in that scent, which brought peace to his body and mind, allowing him to transcend the weariness of his daily toil.
The Transition to the Spiritual Realm
By the age of forty, he had achieved success, winning a gold medal in a regional orchid competition. However, the years of physical toil had taken their toll. He suffered from chronic joint pain, which flared up whenever rain approached. In those moments of agony, he would often catch the faint, soothing scent of orchids, which seemed to offer him comfort and relief. In his dreams, he began to see the flowers coming to life, with flower spirits appearing to keep him company and console him, whispering secrets of a world beyond the physical.
This dream-state continued for several years as his physical strength gradually waned. One day, the dream shifted. The flower spirits led him into their own world—a realm entirely composed of orchids. Everything, from the houses and vehicles to the land and life itself, was made of orchids. He was guided to a mysterious pool and slowly immersed within it. As his body transformed into that of an orchid, he lost consciousness of his human life, only to be awakened now, in this present moment, to reflect upon his past. He described the experience as a gentle dissolution, a fading of into the beauty of the flowers he had once so dearly loved.

Looking at his current form, the spirit expressed a sense of wonder and humility. "I am bending my waist, striving to bloom with my own unique brilliance, just like the orchid children I once tended," he remarked. He noted that the atmosphere at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre was extraordinary, surrounded by a powerful yet gentle energy that brought him a sense of profound peace and relaxation. He felt as though he were finally resting after a journey that had spanned lifetimes, finding a sanctuary where his spirit could breathe.
Shi Facie explained that this was the radiance of the Buddha-light shining upon him, a manifestation of the infinite compassion of . He informed the spirit that this was a magnificent opportunity to transcend the form of an orchid. By having a memorial tablet written, the spirit could be guided to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, specifically to the Dharma-Nature Land, where the peace and satisfaction he felt would be eternal. The spirit expressed deep gratitude for this interview, which served as a reminder of the suffering and confusion inherent in the cycle of rebirth.
