The sound of the bell resonates through our lives in many forms. It may be the deep, resonant toll of the great temple bell that shakes the very foundations of our . It may be the sharp, rhythmic strike of the wooden board used to signal the start of the day in the temple, or perhaps the simple, persistent chime of a small alarm clock by your bedside. Regardless of the form it takes, the purpose of these sounds is singular and compassionate: they are here to remind us to wake up and to cease our long, deep slumber of ignorance.
The great temple bell is particularly powerful; it is designed to awaken the spirits residing in the dark, unseen realms. Its sound is not limited by the physical world we perceive with our eyes. It traverses the vast expanse of space, reaching into the ten directions of the Dharma Realm. Whether in the six realms of existence or the spaces inhabited by the four saints, the sound of the bell can be heard, acting as a beacon of clarity and a call to return to the truth.
When you hear the sound of the bell or the strike of the wooden board, you must cultivate your awareness. Do not let the sound pass by without effect. Upon hearing it, you should awaken immediately and refuse to drift back into the fog of spiritual sleep. To remain in a state of slumber is to invite harm. This harm begins with yourself, but it does not end there; it inevitably affects all other beings, for you are an integral part of the collective whole. When one part of the whole is lost in confusion, the entire body of beings suffers.
Beyond its role as a wake-up call, the bell also serves as a vital guardian. When our spirit wanders into other spaces during the state of sleep, we are vulnerable. The sound of the bell acts as a tether, allowing the spirit to hear the call and return to . It is essential that you return quickly and fully. Do not linger in those other spaces, for they are difficult to navigate and even harder to wake from. If the spirit does not return, the body is left without its master, leading to states of deep confusion or even the cessation of life. This is a matter of the utmost gravity, and one must be diligent and cautious at all times.
