In the Midst of the Suffering of the Saha World, Only Fragrant Light is a Ray of Hope
Recorded and transcribed by ’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe, these teachings were delivered during the third session of the on April 6, 2024. Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju reminds us that the rolling waves of life often churn within our heart, leaving us to wonder how we might ever find true peace. When we allow the various affairs of the world—both the pleasant and the painful—to take root in our heart, it is as if fierce waves are rising to consume our inner tranquility. To live each day with ease, one must learn to keep the heart empty and unburdened, ensuring that no trivial or distracting matters are allowed to linger within.
We see the suffering of beings clearly, and we naturally wish to help them leave suffering behind. However, before we can effectively save others, we must first learn to save ourselves. This is the most vital step. We must ensure that everything we perceive through our eyes and ears is transformed into something wholesome. The purification of is the essential foundation of our practice. When we can maintain a pure heart, we are better equipped to guide others toward the light of the of Ultimate Bliss.
The rolling waves we encounter are merely external conditions. Whether these conditions are favourable or adverse, they are simply what they are. To remain completely unaffected by these external circumstances is the true mark of one who has attained deep meditative concentration. This is the level of skills we strive to achieve At Hsiang Kuang: A Sacred Sanctuary. Consider what these rolling waves truly represent in your daily life:
When we allow these external triggers to stir up waves within our heart, we drown the peaceful landscape of our inner world. We lose the serenity and harmony that are our natural inheritance. This is a great loss and is truly not worth the price of our peace. Instead, we must cultivate the strength of meditative concentration. When you are faced with unkind words, dismissive glances, or cold indifference, you should be able to meet them with a gentle smile. Let these experiences pass by like light smoke, or better yet, let them vanish as if the smoke were never there at all. The earth remains still, and your heart remains tranquil and harmonious. This is the noble demeanour and the profound cultivation that every practitioner should embody. Namo Amituofo.
