Selfishness is Suffering
During the Taiwan New Year Assembly on the eighth of February, 2020, we received profound teachings from . These words serve as a mirror, reflecting the deep connection between the external world and the internal landscape of our hearts.
When we observe lands marked by evil, we see environments defined by barrenness and extreme difficulty. These conditions are worthy of deep contemplation. You might ask, why study such a desolate subject? It is because these places of earthly evil possess distinct characteristics that reveal hidden truths about our existence.
The human heart often mirrors these desolate landscapes. When the heart is filled with evil, it becomes a reflection of that very barrenness. Just as a landscape can be harsh and unforgiving, so too can the internal state of a person who has strayed from the Right Way.
Consider the nature of a heart clouded by negativity. Its movements are rugged and treacherous, filled with sudden, confusing turns that lead one away from the Truth. These internal states manifest in various ways, much like the unsettling features of a blighted landscape: the path becomes difficult to navigate when obstructed by greed, anger, and ignorance; the heart experiences conflicting thoughts that lead to nowhere; and a heart filled with evil lacks the vitality of and wisdom.
How can such a state bring or peace? It is a condition that leads only to further suffering and the accumulation of negative . This is a state that a practitioner of purity must never allow to take root within themselves.
Every individual has the potential to become a pure person. How can one truly achieve such clarity? The answer lies in the intentional removal of the evil that resides within the heart. By clearing away these internal obstacles, you allow your true nature to shine forth once more.
These external environments and their corresponding internal states are here to teach you. You must learn to observe your own heart and recognise how much of it has already begun to mirror these desolate landscapes. Once you have identified these patterns, you must strive to be different. This is the very place where your own power of transformation can be realised.
You must always choose to walk the path of Goodness. Everything you do, and everything you witness, should be an opportunity to deepen your knowledge and your . The environment around you is not merely a backdrop; it is a tool for your education and a catalyst for your transformation. By observing the world with a clear and compassionate heart, you allow the environment to teach you, and in turn, you allow your own nature to be refined and purified.
