Namo Amituofo's discourse:
The lotus does not display itself with vanity, yet it remains inherently clean and pure. Even though it is born from the murky, stagnant mud, it does not show a single trace of contamination. Its stem grows straight and tall, and its petals bloom with a brilliant, captivating radiance. Those who see it feel in their hearts, and they cannot help but gaze upon it again and again. The connection we have with the lotus is truly unique. When we look at this flower, we see a symbol of how one can exist within the muddy world while remaining cool, clear, and untainted.
Our life in the Saha world is much like walking along a path filled with deep, treacherous mud. We often find ourselves covered in this filth, and it becomes incredibly difficult to cleanse ourselves. This world is like a vast pit of mud, and many beings fall into this mire. Because they have been drinking from this muddy water for so long, they find it nearly impossible to climb out. They have spent so much time in these inferior conditions that they have become accustomed to them. They have long since lost the ability to distinguish between the heavens and the hells, and they have forgotten the path to true liberation.
In the hearts of modern humans, the image of the Buddha has long since faded. People rely only on their own limited and speak only from their own narrow viewpoints. Look at the state of our streets and the conflicts within our families. We see people entangled in deep emotional entanglements, driven by greed, and consumed by their own desires. Because they cannot see the truth, they find it difficult to be sincere. The root of this problem is the ego, which creates and spreads this pollution. The miserable state of the world is a reflection of the state of our own hearts. How does this state of mind arise? We were all originally pure, so why have we become so stained? Why do we lack the appearance of purity? It is because of the dust of the world.
Nothing in this world is worth holding onto, yet our attachments cause us endless harm. When we are filled with attachments, our hearts are always missing something. We are rarely satisfied, and we seldom feel gratitude. Our hearts can never find peace because we are constantly trying to satisfy our endless desires. How can you find peace? You must learn to let go of these desires. When you see that you have a physical body, you must also learn to let go of the attachment to this life. When you reach a state where there is no ego, your heart will be cool, calm, and at ease. When your heart is full of everything, you have reached the fundamental state of perfection.
When you let go, your karmic connections will naturally reach completion. The world is empty and illusory; time passes by, and it will never wait for you. If you let your days pass by in vain, when will you ever reach awakening? When will you finally wake up? Your life will pass by in the blink of an eye, and you will not be able to take a single thing with you. Only your spirit will remain. You must grasp this opportunity and listen to my counseling. You must diligently cultivate your and your wisdom. Combine your Faith, Vows, and Practice into one, and never retreat or falter. This is the true path of practice. When your heart is truly sincere, it is as empty and vast as the void, and the only difference between you and the Buddha is the ego. You should be like the pure lotus, and like the stem of the lotus—hollow on the inside and straight on the outside, never wavering from the Middle Way. By using the lotus as a symbol, you can attain the lotus of the of Ultimate Bliss. I offer this metaphor to you now, hoping that you will understand the meaning of true purity.
