Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju offers profound guidance on the nature of our practice. This teaching serves as a vital reminder for all who seek to deepen their connection with the of Ultimate Bliss.
To reach the state of chanting without the thought of chanting, and not chanting while in the state of chanting, is to attain a deep level of spiritual practice. It is not merely a mechanical repetition of words, but a state of being where the Buddha-name resonates naturally within the heart. When one reaches this level, the practice becomes effortless, flowing as naturally as floating clouds and a gentle breeze. It is a state where the practitioner is fully present, yet detached from the ego.
Where does your mind go when you are not focused on yourself? In this state of true practice, every thought that arises is directed entirely toward the welfare of all beings. There is not a single thread of selfishness or ego remaining. You are completely immersed in this state of , and it happens naturally, without any sense of forced effort or strain. The root of your thoughts, emerging from the depths of your heart, becomes entirely pure, entirely good, and entirely dedicated to the benefit of all beings.
To achieve such a state, you must first raise your level of awareness. You must engage in the purification of your thoughts so that they are no longer controlled by the habits of ordinary beings. When your thoughts are purified, you gain the ability to govern your own mind. You are no longer a slave to your impulses; instead, your mind becomes a clear, steady vessel for the Buddha-name. This is the foundation of your spiritual progress.
If you find that your thoughts are difficult to transform, you must be even more diligent in raising your awareness. Do not be lenient with yourself; do not forgive your own wrong actions or unwholesome habits. You must not allow evil thoughts or negative behaviours to arise again and again. If you allow these to persist, you are essentially surrendering to the karma of birth, old age, sickness, and death. When the six realms of rebirth appear clearly before your eyes, the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss will seem very far away, and you will have no opportunity to even discuss the state of no-thought.
Even when you face these challenges, you must remain steadfast. You must face your karma directly and continue to raise your awareness. Keep the Buddha-name in your heart at all times, and never let it leave your mind. This is the most important task for any practitioner. By doing so, you will eventually find your way back to your true nature and ensure your rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
