Understanding Namo Amituofo and the Forty-eight Great Vows
True is not something that can be forced or manufactured; it is a profound sense of happiness that arises naturally from the depths of the heart. When this joy is genuine, there is not a single trace of reluctance or artificiality. It flows as freely as a mountain spring, unencumbered by the weight of worldly expectations or the pressures of the ego.
Those who are content in their hearts will find that gratitude and joy are their constant companions. They understand that everything they possess in this present moment—every comfort, every opportunity, and every breath—is not easily attained. Yet, they find themselves in the fortunate position of possessing these things in abundance. How many of us truly pause to reflect on this? How many of us realise that our very existence is a gift that should be cherished with every passing second?
Consider the state of your Six Roots—your eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind. They are intact and functioning, allowing you to perceive the world and, more importantly, to engage in the noble work of spiritual practice. You still possess the breath of life, and you have a physical form that serves as a vessel for your journey toward . This is a rare and precious condition.
Think of the countless beings who are currently struggling for the simple ability to draw a single breath. They are locked in a desperate battle against the demons of illness and the inevitability of death. While they fight for the mere survival of their physical bodies, you have the opportunity to use your body to transcend the cycle of rebirth. Do you see how fortunate you are?
Students of the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre, you are blessed with a life where your basic needs—food, clothing, shelter, and transportation—are all provided for. The conditions for your practice are perfectly prepared before you. You do not need to worry about the turbulence of the outside world; you need only focus on your diligent practice, seeking to return to your true self. What an exceptionally favourable environment this is for your spiritual growth!
Beyond merely working hard at your practice, you have a greater responsibility. You must take this deep sense of gratitude and joy that resides within your heart and offer it as a form of Generosity. Share this light with others. Let your joy be a bridge that allows everyone around you to partake in the same sense of peace and thankfulness. This is the most effective and beautiful way to serve the world.
The most direct way to achieve this is to begin with yourself. Maintain a mind that is as still as a calm lake, free from the ripples of agitation or desire. Keep a gentle smile upon your face, for this simple act makes you approachable and kind to all you encounter. When you serve the community, do so with sincerity, treating every person you meet with warmth and respect.
Be grateful for every circumstance, and meet every challenge with a heart full of joy. A practitioner who embodies these qualities is naturally respected and cherished; others will feel drawn to you, eager to learn from your example. Remember, gratitude and joy are not reserved for a select few. They are inherent qualities that exist within the heart and upon the face of every single person. As students of the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, walking beside the Buddha and following his Buddha-actions, let your gratitude and joy arise from the heart, and let them guide your every step toward the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
