How often do you find your mind wandering, drifting aimlessly from one thought to the next? People often think involuntarily, caught in a cycle of constant mental activity. You may find yourself thinking of this, thinking of that, or looking toward the east and then the west. This restless state of mind is a common burden for all beings. However, we must learn to direct our thoughts toward goodness. Yet, even the most virtuous of thoughts cannot compare to the act of chanting . Everything that is good is ultimately surpassed by the simple, direct, and continuous practice of chanting Namo Amituofo.
We must understand that thinking good is not merely the opposite of thinking bad; it is a state of being that aligns with our original nature. Often, we become so accustomed to negative thoughts that we forget what true goodness really is. To think good is to embody the following qualities:
Thinking is a habit, but we must realise that the act of thinking itself is an illusory experience. When you dwell on negative thoughts, you cause yourself great harm. In the very moment you think of something harmful, you are inadvertently summoning the past. You awaken the beings you have harmed or with whom you have formed karmic debts in previous lifetimes. These may then come to seek revenge, causing you to fall into the bitter cycle of aging, sickness, and death, and the manifestation of . This is a heavy price to pay, and it is truly not worth it.
Why not choose to think good instead? Thinking good is an expression of , Wisdom, and a vast mind-capacity that embraces all beings. It is a path that is truly worth following. Every manifestation and application of beautiful, virtuous conduct is good because it is in sync with your true self. Since this is the case, why would you ever choose to think of things that are harmful or negative? To think good is to be good, and to be good is to find peace. By choosing to dwell in goodness, you align your heart with the light of Namo Amituofo, ensuring that your journey remains steady and true. Namo Amituofo.
