Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju. Recorded and transcribed by ’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
Do you truly understand that you are currently trapped within the cycle of rebirth, unable to master your own destiny? Do you know where this peril lies? For the fourfold assembly of disciples, the common struggle that hinders progress is the onset of being drowsy and the tendency to drift into space during practice. This is a state of spiritual vulnerability that must be addressed with the utmost sincerity.
When your heart is not pure, your practice becomes obstructed. Think of your mind as a piece of pristine white cloth; any attachment you fail to release acts as a stain upon it. These attachments manifest in various forms:
These stains are exactly what , spiritual attachment beings, and demon crowds look for. They see these vulnerabilities clearly. When you attempt to practise diligently, these unresolved attachments rise to the surface, causing you to fall into being drowsy or drift into space, effectively stalling your spiritual progress.
The danger is most acute at the time of death. When the suffering of the separation of the four elements occurs, the agony of and mind becomes intense. If you have not cleared these attachments, they will manifest in your final moments, causing you to stop chanting Buddha's name. Because your focus is broken, you fail to reach the of Ultimate Bliss and instead fall back into the six realms of existence. This is the primary reason why many who claim to follow the Pure Land path fail to reach their destination. This is why we must truly let go of all conditions and chant Buddha's name with one heart.
There is another great peril: the failure to transform one's personality. When anger arises, it acts like a fire that burns down your entire forest of merit. It is truly a tragedy to see the merit you have accumulated over days and months destroyed in a single moment of rage. Furthermore, you must work to break through your ego-attachment, your narrow views, and your sense of ownership over the body and mind. You must learn to let go of your , , , and . Instead, you should cultivate and tolerance. Be compassionate again and again; be tolerant again and again. By doing so, you will elevate the quality of your spirit. This is how you can resolve the peril you face and save yourself through your own practice. Namo Amituofo.
