For all sentient beings who possess a physical body, the most fundamental and pressing need is to survive. We cling to this life with every fibre of our being. However, when one faces the inevitable end of life, everything one has ever possessed—wealth, status, and worldly attachments—suddenly becomes insignificant and trivial. These things that we once held so dear lose all meaning in the face of mortality.
If you still have time remaining in this life, you must look beyond mere physical survival. You must seek to ensure that your life energy does not simply extinguish into nothingness. You must strive to realise that the spirit never dies and that your ultimate destination should be the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. True salvation is found within the six-character name of . By taking refuge in this sacred name, you can be saved and enter the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, where suffering is left behind forever.
You must chant the name of the Buddha with a single, focused heart. Whether you are chanting with a heart of gratitude, a heart of repentance, or a heart of longing, the most important instruction is this: hold onto the Buddha-name tightly. Do not let it go. Chant with the utmost sincerity and earnestness. As you purify your heart and your mental notes, you will find that the Buddha's are infused directly into the Buddha-name itself. This is the strength that will carry you through the cycle of rebirth.
