Understanding Namo Amituofo and the Forty-eight Great Vows
The is a profound opportunity for us to pause and reflect upon the state of our own minds. On the first day of January 2020, at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia, we were reminded of the nature of our mental activity. Our minds are rarely still; they are constantly occupied by intentions, thoughts, and reflections. However, within these processes, there is often a great deal of delusion. Because we are so accustomed to this constant mental chatter, we rarely stop to consider the quality of what we are thinking. We must ask ourselves: are these thoughts truly serving our path to ?
It is our duty as practitioners to purify these mental states. We must ensure that our intentions, thoughts, and reflections are not tainted by impurity or confusion. The first step in this vital process is to anchor everything we do in Goodness. When we consciously choose to make our intentions Goodness, our thoughts Goodness, and our reflections Goodness, we begin the work of purification. This is not merely a suggestion; it is the fundamental requirement for any practitioner who wishes to make genuine progress on the path to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
As we deepen our practice, we move from Goodness into a state of absolute purity. This is the essence of what it means to have pure intent:
By cultivating this state of mind, we leave suffering behind and find true happiness. We must strive to maintain this clarity in every moment, ensuring that our inner world remains a reflection of the Truth.
