Turning Towards Goodness
Focus is the essential condition for success and achievement in your spiritual practice. It is through the cultivation of deep focus that one enters the state of single-mindedness. When you are truly focused, your attention becomes concentrated and unified. Your thoughts cease to wander or scatter, allowing you to enter a state of pure, singular intent.
To achieve this, your entire being must participate in the act of chanting . Your heart must act as the supreme commander, issuing the command to chant the name of Namo Amituofo with total clarity. When this command is issued, your spirit receives the message, and your soul—your three hun souls and seven po souls—begins to gather and unify within your physical form.
Once the heart issues the command, your brain receives the signal. It then transmits the message to chant, allowing your Six Roots to function in perfect harmony:
Your heart must remain steadfast, holding firmly to the six characters of Namo Amituofo. At this moment, it is vital that your soul is not disturbed by external interference. If your soul wanders away from your body, your spirit will lose its ability to concentrate, and your focus will scatter.
Even if your Six Roots appear to be functioning normally, a scattered spirit will prevent you from maintaining a continuous flow of the Buddha-name. The chanting will become fragmented and interrupted, making it impossible to achieve the single-mindedness that your heart intends. Therefore, you must ensure that your body and mind remain clear and alert.
Your heart must be the master of your life. Your spirit—the three hun souls and seven po souls—must remain anchored within your body, free from any external interference. Only when your body, mind, and spirit are in perfect coordination can you successfully complete the practice of single-minded Buddha-recitation.
The same principle applies to the ultimate goal of your practice: seeing your true nature. To reach this state, you must possess a high level of awareness. This requires a complete and harmonious state of being:
When your Body-Mind-Spirit is complete and unified, and you engage in active and persistent purification, and then more purification, you will eventually see your true nature. This is the fruit of your diligent practice.
