Diligent practice is not merely a phrase to be spoken. It is found in the act of repenting for past mistakes and truly changing one's ways. When you follow the teachings of with steady, grounded steps, you make progress in every moment. We must cultivate the heart and discipline simultaneously; when both are harmonised, the body and mind will naturally transform.
The first step in this transformation is to change your "self," personal ego, and selfishness. You must soften your tone and your expressions in all interactions. The foundations of your practice in the path are simple yet profound:
These are your basic daily lessons. Furthermore, is a vital skill. By using your to resolve the grievances of , you clear the path for your own spiritual growth.
You must break through the states of being drowsy and agitated. Diligent practice must be maintained in every minute and every second. You should be clear in your heart about whether you are advancing or retreating. If you find yourself retreating, reflect upon your actions and identify where you have gone wrong. It is not difficult to change and advance again; the true difficulty lies in not being aware of the days passing by in vain.
When you are advancing, you will inevitably face tests of your state of mind. Only by passing these tests can you truly say you have made progress. If you have not yet passed, you will be tested again until you break through. This is the only way to overcome every barrier on the path to .
Falling into and thought will only invite karmic creditors and spiritual attachment. These create obstacles that make it difficult to maintain a clear and pure mind. Whenever you feel this happening, you must be vigilant and return to chanting Namo Amituofo immediately. By doing so, you will find that you have something to gain and something to realise in every moment. Persistent and active diligent practice is your duty as a practitioner.
Through continuous purification, you will achieve a pure body and mind. Your Six Roots will become clear, and you will no longer be controlled by external conditions. Learn to be inclusive of others' faults and maintain an unmoved mind. By transforming your , you will eventually see your true self. In this very life, you can save yourself and save others, finding the freedom and coolness of heart required to return to the Western Pure Land.
