The Symbol of the Lotus

In this world, the lotus is a cherished symbol of purity. It represents the extraordinary ability to rise from the muddy waters of our daily lives without being stained by the impurities of the world. However, in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, the lotus takes on a much deeper and more profound significance. It serves as a living reflection of a practitioner’s meditative concentration, the depth of their virtue, and the breadth of their compassionate vow to save all suffering beings.

The Mirror of Your Practice

For those of you who are practitioners, your lotus is a mirror of your journey. In the past, you may have been stained by the defilements of the world, but in this very moment, you have the opportunity to purify your heart and mind. As you strive forward in your practice, your progress is clearly manifested in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Within the lotus pond of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, each lotus flower tells a story of the practitioner it represents:

• Some are merely buds, just beginning to form.
• Some are half-opened, showing the early signs of awakening.
• Some are in full bloom, radiating the light of their true nature.
• Some stand tall and upright, reflecting a firm and unwavering resolve.
• Some are still stretching, while others have yet to lift their heads.
• Some appear weak or drooping, as if they have lost their strength, while others are clearly working hard to rise and flourish.

These manifestations exist across all four lands of the Pure Land, encompassing the three grades and nine classes of rebirth, each according to the individual conditions and the depth of the practitioner's heart.

The Fragrance and Colour of the Soul

The fragrance of these lotus flowers is never the same. For some, it is rich and profound; for others, it is subtle or even faint, depending entirely on the state of the practitioner's cultivation. The colour of your lotus also changes, shifting and evolving as your practice deepens and your wisdom manifests. You must realise that these flowers grow in the purity of the Western Land, yet they can also fade if one retreats from their practice or allows their mind to become clouded once more.

Advancing Toward Awakening

To ensure your lotus remains vibrant and continues to bloom, you must cultivate the state of no-thought, no-selfishness, and no-self. By letting go of the ego and the attachments that bind you to the cycle of rebirth, you can advance with diligence and reach a higher level of spiritual attainment. Do not let a single moment pass in vain; keep your heart focused on the path of the Buddha, and you will surely find your way to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
