During the noon offering of the , we are blessed to receive teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju. He reminds us that true is not found in worldly gains, but in the steady, sincere progress of the fourfold assembly of disciples on the path of practice.
What is truly worth rejoicing over? It is the visible and internal progress of the fourfold assembly. When we speak of progress, we are not referring to superficial achievements, but to the fundamental transformation of the heart and mind. This progress manifests in several key areas of our daily lives.
Your personality is a reflection of your . It is a construct formed over countless lifetimes within the cycle of reincarnation, and it manifests in your daily interactions. If you remain stubborn, rigid, or overly subjective, you are merely reinforcing the karmic patterns that bind you to the cycle of suffering. However, if you can consciously work to transform these traits, you will find great cause for joy:
Many practitioners struggle with drowsiness during meditation or feel as though they are entering different spaces of . These are common challenges for the fourfold assembly. Often, these states arise because your personality has not yet been transformed, your attachments remain, and your subjective views still dominate your perspective. Because you have not yet learned to see through and let go of these obstacles, your karma remains active, and your continue to exert their influence.
However, when you reach a point where you can truly let go of your personality, release your attachments, and abandon your subjective views, you will find that these states of drowsiness or interference begin to diminish or disappear entirely. This is the moment of transforming your karma, and it is a significant achievement worthy of great praise.
The ultimate joy is found in the success of your practice of chanting . We strive for the state of pure thoughts in succession, where the holy name flows through our hearts 24/7, never ceasing. When you reach the stage where you chant without the thought of chanting, and where your chanting leads to , the wisdom of the Buddha manifests within you. At this stage, you are simultaneously practising the six perfections, and you are well on your way to attaining Buddhahood. This is the highest form of joy.
