Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju, recorded by the chief writer, Venerable HaiZe.
My dear students, you have already learned how to adjust and manage your time effectively. By establishing the Thursday evening group prostrations as a regular part of your routine, you have found a way to bring stability to your practice. When you commit to this schedule, you are better able to focus your heart in one place. This is the foundation of your spiritual growth.
When you engage in prostrations, you must ensure that your entire being is fully integrated with the Buddha-name. Your heart must follow the chanting of the Buddha's name, and your body must move in rhythm with the prostrations. As your ears listen to the Buddha-name, your heart becomes in sync with the sound. When you reach a state where every single bow is performed entirely within the Buddha-name, you will find that no delusions or messy thoughts can enter your mind. In this state, every thought follows the previous one in a continuous stream, leading you to the profound state of chanting without chanting, and not chanting while chanting.
If you experience physical discomfort, do not be discouraged. You may kneel or adjust your posture to continue your prostrations. Simply chant the Buddha's name as you are able, and perform as many bows as your condition allows. This is a vital test of your practice: can you let go of your attachment to the physical body? By remaining in the temple, bathed in the Buddha’s light, your heart will naturally become calm and undergo purification. Through the consistent chanting of the Buddha's name and the act of prostrations, both the collective and the individual self will be cleansed.
If you truly understand how to cherish your time, you will use these three hours of group practice for diligent practice. By purifying your body, mind, and spirit in this way, you will attain a level of ease and freedom that is truly supreme. This is the path to returning to your original nature and fulfilling your deepest vows. .
