For every practitioner, the examination hall is not a physical room, but the entirety of the external environment. It encompasses all the external conditions, people, objects, and events that you encounter in your daily life. These are all part of the cycle of Causal Conditions, arising and ceasing in a constant, shifting flow. When you can clearly recognise that these phenomena have no fixed form and are merely manifestations of cause and effect, you will be able to solve the problems they present. You will no longer be trapped or confused by the questions posed by the world around you.
The true, great examination is not found in the world, but within your own heart. The Buddha’s teachings are essentially teachings of the heart. Your heart can be as vast as the infinite universe, or it can be as small as a single grain of sand. The size of your heart is directly related to the depth with which you can solve the problems of life. Do not seek the answers to these tests outside of yourself; instead, look inward to find the solution.
Who is it that sets these examination questions for you? The examiners are many and varied:
Each of these sources provides different types of questions, all designed to test your spiritual maturity and the purity of your intent.
The content of these examinations often revolves around the fundamental challenges that every practitioner must face to purify their nature:
These are the basic lessons and examination questions for any practitioner seeking to remove the stains of impurity. If you still find yourself influenced by these habits and personality traits, you must face them directly and change your ways. Once you have successfully corrected these tendencies, you will have passed this stage of the examination. You will have taken a significant step forward, and the people, objects, and environments that once seemed like obstacles will suddenly appear as empty and illusory.
When the stains of impurity are removed, you will be able to see the examination environment with clarity. Regardless of where the test takes place or who sets the questions, you will know that all of it is illusory, and your heart will remain unmoved. To pass these tests, you must rely on the following foundations:
By applying these principles, you will pass the examination smoothly and elevate your practice to a higher level.
This great examination hall extends throughout the vastness of the Realm and across the cosmic expanse of the universe. Your own body and mind are also vital examination halls. They are not only capable of encompassing the entire universe, but they also contain the entirety of time and space, without beginning or end. If you can pass these tests, your Body-Mind-Spirit will become transparent, and you will see your true nature. You will then be qualified to become a teacher for both humans and heavenly beings, capable of teaching others, saving the world, and leading all beings forward on the path to liberation.
