Within the Gate, the practice of chanting the Buddha's name stands as an essential lesson for every practitioner. It is the primary vehicle for those who have vowed to realise their true nature or who aspire to rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. You must never overlook this practice or seek the truth in distant places, for the path to liberation is found right here in the chanting of the Buddha's name.
What does it mean to chant the Buddha's name with a single mind? It means your heart is entirely dedicated to the Buddha-name. There is no room for distraction or mixed intentions. You must engage in diligent practice, focusing your heart on the Buddha-name, letting the Buddha-name flow continuously from your lips. As you chant, you must reach a state where there is no longer a sense of self or others, no more disputes, no more obstacles, no more discriminations, and no more attachments.
In this state of deep practice, the —Greed, Anger, Ignorance, Arrogance, and Doubt—and the —wealth, lust, fame, food, and sleep—begin to fade. Because you are constantly bathed in the Buddha's , these negative tendencies are gradually transformed and eventually vanish. Your heart becomes a vessel filled only with the Buddha-name.
As you chant each word with absolute clarity, you dissolve the deep-seated confusion and anger that have long clouded your spirit. You are sweeping away the dust and filth of the world, breaking through the illusory nature of our reality. By drawing your Six Roots inward and focusing them entirely on the chanting of the Buddha's name, you remain undisturbed by the external environment, maintaining a continuous, unbroken stream of recitation.
Through every syllable of the Buddha-name, you receive the profound blessings of the Buddha. This process purifies your heart until it is entirely free from the stains of the world. You reach a state where you chant without the thought of chanting, and where the absence of thought itself becomes the chant. The Buddha-name arises naturally, echoing within your heart and surrounding your very being. This is the essence of single-minded Buddha-recitation, leading you into the realm of no-mind recitation.
In this practice, you naturally uphold the Precepts, meditative concentration arises spontaneously, and wisdom manifests clearly. The Three Learnings of Precepts, Samadhi, and Wisdom are all attained within this single-minded focus. For the Pure Land practitioner, chanting the Buddha's name is the fundamental foundation. When you can chant with a single mind, you will experience the fullness of Dharma and reap the true benefits of the Pure Land.
Remember that arousing Bodhicitta and focusing exclusively on the Buddha is the essential prerequisite. You must cultivate the heart that seeks to realise your true nature and attain Buddhahood, using the chanting of the Buddha's name as your vow to reach the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. In this state of exclusive, single-minded focus, every thought is a thought of the Buddha. Where there is a thought of the Buddha, there is the presence of the Buddha. If you continue in this way, you will certainly attain Buddhahood.
