The Formless Nature of the Heart

During the Thrice Yearning Ceremony, we gather to reflect upon the depth of our devotion. The heart is fundamentally formless and possesses no physical weight. Because it is intangible, we often find ourselves questioning whether we have truly given our all in our practice. How can one discern if the heart is fully committed to the path of the Buddha?

The Manifestation of Sincerity

True sincerity is not hidden; it is revealed through the entirety of your being. You can observe the state of your heart through several channels:

• Your physical actions and the words you speak in daily life.
• The way you interact with the world through your Six Roots.
• The profound stillness you maintain even in moments of silence.

The heart is inherently vast, encompassing the entire universe. It exists within a nature that is boundless and without limits. However, the reason we struggle to fully express this sincerity is due to the heavy accumulation of karma from countless aeons. Our past actions and current habits create different manifestations in our lives, often clouding our original intent.

The Path to Awakening

Those who truly understand the inner meaning of giving one's all possess a unique clarity. Upon meeting another practitioner, or even just hearing of them, they can immediately perceive whether that person’s heart is genuinely devoted. For those who wish to practise this level of sincerity, the path is clear:

• Precepts must come first, providing the foundation for your conduct.
• This leads to a heart that is peaceful, calm, and free from the ripples of desire, which is the state of meditative concentration.
• By calmly accepting all changes in life, you cultivate wisdom.
• Through this wisdom, you will reach the state of an awakened being and gain the ability to save countless confused beings, guiding them to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.

May you always strive to give your all, letting your heart return to its original, pure state as you walk the path of the Buddha.
