Before the dawn arrives, a profound darkness blankets the earth. In this stillness, countless beings remain in a deep, heavy slumber, unable to awaken to the truth of their existence. Yet, there are also those who have already risen, preparing themselves for the day ahead. They understand the value of time and strive to make the most of every moment, ensuring that when the world finally awakens, they are already engaged in meaningful work. We must take this to heart and never allow our precious time to pass in vain.
At the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre, we do not wait for the sun to rise before we begin our work. Long before the first light touches the horizon, the fourfold assembly rises between one and two o'clock in the morning to prepare for our daily practice. By the time the sun begins to climb, we have already completed our essential spiritual duties:
This daily practice is the foundation of our spiritual life. It is how we gather the provisions necessary for the journey ahead. When you perform your daily practice with diligence and sincerity, you are preparing yourself for the challenges of the day. This is the true reason why a practitioner makes steady progress and why their daily actions carry such profound power.
However, performing these tasks is not something that can be achieved through mere habit or mechanical action. To truly succeed, one must possess the three essential provisions of the Pure Land path: Faith, Vows, and Practice. These three provisions are the lifeblood of our morning service. We must ask ourselves: have we truly attained them? Furthermore, as we listen to the sutras and hear the , we must strive to understand the underlying principles so that we may put them into action. Can you truly grasp these principles and live them out in your daily life?
In this modern age, many beings are unable to use technology, the internet, and mobile devices wisely. Instead of using these tools for growth, they become victims of them, finding themselves controlled by the very things they intended to master. Some walk through life with their hearts covered by a veil of darkness, yet they are entirely unaware of this shadow. Others may be aware of the darkness, yet they feel powerless to change their circumstances. Like the world before the dawn, they are shrouded in a heavy, impenetrable gloom, finding it nearly impossible to wake up.
It is my sincere wish that the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre serves as the first ray of light—the dawn that breaks the darkness. I call upon the fourfold assembly to be the ones who dispel this ignorance. By your example, you can break through the darkness and bring genuine light and hope to all those who are still lost in the night. Let us continue to work together to leave suffering behind and find happiness, guided always by the light of Namo Amituofo.
