Understanding Namo Amituofo and the Forty-eight Great Vows
Teachings from , recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe:
The human body is a complex organic system, composed of countless individual cells. Each of these cells possesses its own unique space and specific function. When we speak of an organic body, we are referring to a living entity that is endowed with vital functions, capabilities, and energy. Within the space of each cell, there exists both the physical structure and the presence of spiritual life.
When the functions of your cells are strong, your body is healthy. You are able to fully manifest the potential of every cell, resulting in quick reactions and a vibrant state of being. Conversely, when cellular function is weak, manifests as a state of illness or premature ageing. In such conditions, the cellular functions are diminished, and your physical and mental reactions become sluggish.
Consider the state of a newly born cell. It is pure and unstained, possessing vast potential for growth. When it remains in a state of activation, health, and purity, it can grow strong and flourish. However, as we move through life, we begin to develop complex thoughts, discriminations, and negative emotions. These problems inevitably arise, and the —greed, anger, ignorance, arrogance, and doubt—begin to take root and accumulate within us.
As these negative states take hold, your cells become polluted. Many of the memories stored deep within these cells are stirred into wakefulness. Consequently, your karma and your begin to manifest one by one. Within the very space of your cells, a cycle of settling debts, seeking revenge, or repaying kindnesses begins to unfold. As you age and your environment changes, your cravings for the increase: wealth and material possessions, sensual pleasures, fame and status, food and nourishment, and sleep and comfort.
As these desires intensify, the pollution within your cells deepens. They are no longer pure or good. They become constrained, and the cells begin to deteriorate, lose their original quality, and show signs of stunted growth, stagnation, illness, or even death.
The memories stored within your cells are not merely biological; they refer to the of your heart and the three hun souls and seven po souls of your spirit. Your cells belong to the physical body, yet the changes in your body are deeply influenced by your heart and your spirit. In turn, the changes in your body reflect back upon the development of your heart and spirit. This Body-Mind-Spirit connection is a continuous cycle that shapes the entirety of your life and determines where your spirit will go in the next life.
As a practitioner, you must engage in True Cultivation. You must be cautious and never allow yourself to be led astray by the various illusions, sensations, or the attachment to that the body presents. Do not let these obstacles hinder your practice. Instead, use this temporary, finite body to manifest the functions of your heart and spirit. By adjusting your behaviour through the methods of practice, you allow your Body-Mind-Spirit to interact and cooperate in a way that leads to a state of absolute purity and goodness, the purification of , and a return to your original, true nature.
Through the physical body and the Six Sense Organs: eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind, the capabilities of your spirit are fully expressed. This leads to the first stage of practice: becoming an awakened being, where you finally see your original face. Following this, you enter the second stage: saving the world and helping all beings. This is the concrete realisation of the Buddha-heart, the Buddha-vow, and Buddha-actions.
Finally, you reach the third stage: the return of your spirit to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. By doing so, you complete your vow to save yourself and to guide all beings to rebirth in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. Namo Amituofo.
