A skilled guide is a virtuous teacher and a true spiritual friend. They possess the unique ability to respond appropriately to the needs of others and to help beings tame their unruly minds, doing so with perfect precision. This role requires a balance of merit, virtue, and practical skill. In the process of guiding others, they must harmoniously employ , Wisdom, tolerance, and a vast mind-capacity. By observing the specific conditions and karmic roots of each individual, they provide teachings that are perfectly suited to the moment, ensuring that every action is taken with purpose and clarity.
A skilled guide always treats those they help with the utmost respect. They recognise that every single being possesses the inherent Buddha-nature and a true self. By maintaining a heart of equality, they do not look down upon the practitioner, even when that person is struggling under the weight of their past karmic actions. Instead, through deep Wisdom and careful observation, the guide identifies the strengths and virtues hidden within the practitioner. With immense patience and a gentle, compassionate attitude, they encourage the practitioner to utilise these positive qualities. Once a foundation of trust and mutual respect is established, the guide can then begin to address the practitioner's shortcomings, shortfalls, and the 'self,' personal ego, and selfishness, helping them to change their ways and integrate harmoniously into the community.
To be a truly skilled guide, one must be selfless and possess the quality of . They can see the problems of the practitioner with absolute clarity, yet the practitioner must also play their part. Transformation cannot happen through the guide's effort alone. The practitioner must be willing to cooperate, to receive teachings, to change their ways, and to engage in diligent practice. It is the combination of these two forces—the power of the Buddha and the sincere effort of the practitioner—that allows for genuine progress. This is why a true spiritual friend and a skilled guide are so rare and difficult to encounter in this world.
If you are fortunate enough to encounter such a guide, you must cherish the opportunity. Hold onto it firmly and follow their teachings closely. This encounter is a precious chance to transform your life, transform your , escape the cycle of being reincarnated, and secure your rebirth in the . Do not let this moment pass in vain, for it is the gateway to your ultimate liberation.
