To broaden the heart is to truly let go and find a state of profound inner peace. When you are able to expand your heart, you allow your mind to settle into a state of deep tranquility. This is the state of being able to let go completely, where you no longer carry the heavy burdens of worry or lingering attachments.
In its original state, your heart is boundless. It is as vast and infinite as the realm of emptiness itself. You may ask, if the heart is naturally infinite, why does it feel so restricted? Why is there a need to consciously broaden it? The answer lies in the many layers of attachment we have accumulated over time.
We feel restricted because our hearts are filled with heavy burdens that we refuse to put down. These burdens manifest in various ways that cloud our clarity:
When these thoughts occupy your mind, your heart loses its natural, expansive quality. You become trapped in a cycle of your own making.
In your practice, you must recognise that if your heart holds onto these worldly objects, it becomes stained. A heart filled with such things cannot be clear. It is far better to have a heart that is empty of these stains, for in that emptiness, there is true purity.
If you find that you are still struggling or feeling trapped by these mental obstacles, it is a sign that you must increase your diligent practice. You must work even harder to let go, allowing your heart to gradually become broader and more luminous. As your heart expands, your wisdom will naturally begin to manifest, and you will see the world with newfound clarity.
To cultivate this broadened heart, you should adopt these essential practices as your daily guide:
By following these steps, you will find the remedy for a constricted heart. May you walk this path with sincerity and find the peace that comes from a truly broadened heart.
