Practising Goodness
In our daily lives, we are constantly surrounded by various people, events, and objects. Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju reminds us that these are not merely external occurrences; they are mirrors for our own practice. If you observe someone acting in a way that lacks Goodness or committing a fault, you must take it as a serious warning. Do not allow yourself to repeat their mistakes or fall into the same unwholesome patterns. Your duty is to remain vigilant and ensure that you do not walk the same path of error.
When you see someone suffering through difficulties that seem impossible to resolve, understand that they are facing karmic obstacles. You should strive to clearly identify the causes behind their suffering. Take this as a warning to avoid planting those same seeds in your own life, so that you do not have to endure the bitter fruits of such actions in the future.
We must be particularly mindful of the Five Poisons that cloud our hearts and lead us away from the Right Way. When you observe the presence of greed, you must be especially cautious. This includes:
Take these observations as a warning. Do not follow in the footsteps of those consumed by these desires, for such attachments lead only to the dark and suffering-filled existence of the ghost realm.
When you observe anger in others—whether it manifests as a fierce expression, harsh and angry words, or deep-seated resentment within the heart—you must take it as a warning. Such anger acts like a fire that burns away the forest of one's merits, leading to the severe suffering and retribution of the hells. Instead of reacting with anger, you must respond with .
When you observe ignorance, confusion, or a lack of clarity, especially in those who refuse to listen to wise counseling and consequently harm both themselves and others, take this as a warning. This state of mind leads to the retribution of the animal realm. You must be willing to listen to good advice, for it is through this that you open your heart to wisdom and clarity.
When you observe arrogance and the tendency to make discriminations between high and low, take this as a warning. Such pride limits your progress and makes it difficult to break through your current state. You must instead practise being humble and modest, always ready to change your ways and treat others with respect.
Finally, when you observe doubt or a lack of faith, take this as a warning. Without faith, it is difficult to make progress, difficult to see your true heart, and impossible to reach the state of an awakened being. You must work to remove your doubts and attain true faith. By listening to good words and following the right path, you will be able to move from confusion to , from wrong paths to the right path, and from impurity to purity. Through this process, you will remove defilements, attain purity, and finally succeed in returning to your true self. .
