Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju, recorded by Venerable HaiZe on October 5, 2025.
Composure is the state of being calm, steady, and grounded. It is the natural demeanour and conduct of a practitioner who has attained a high level of meditative concentration. When we speak of composure in the context of the path, we are describing a state of mind that remains unshaken by the external environment. It is a reflection of one's inner stability, which is essential for any true spiritual advancement.
In our practice of the Pure Land path, we rely upon the compassionate Buddha's of . When you align your life with the Universal Principles, Truth, and the Right Path, you create the necessary conditions for your practice to flourish. Those who possess deep meditative concentration through the act of chanting the Buddha's name will naturally manifest this quality of composure. To be a practitioner who seeks progress within this stillness is a powerful demonstration of one's faith and dedication.
When your heart is settled and stable, your wisdom will naturally grow within that state of meditative concentration. This growth is the true sign of progress. For those who diligently practise the Three Learnings of , Samadhi, and Wisdom, this composure becomes a steady anchor. Within these Three Learnings, one can see that those who possess true concentration and wisdom are those who have been diligent in their adherence to the Precepts. When you have concentration, and wisdom manifests within it, you will find that you are composed and steady, free from the agitation of a restless mind.
Those who are diligent in chanting the Buddha's name are simultaneously cultivating the Three Learnings of Precepts, Samadhi, and Wisdom. Because you are supported by the Buddha's blessings, your Body-Mind-Spirit undergoes a profound purification. This allows the power of the Three Learnings to circulate and reinforce one another, assisting you in your comprehensive practice. Before one has managed to transform and reached the state of an awakened being, persistent and diligent practice is the duty of every practitioner. For the students of Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, residing in this excellent environment, seeking progress through composure is the way to move forward, step by step, along the path to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
