Understanding Namo Amituofo and the Forty-eight Great Vows
To return to the West means to be received and guided by , allowing one to return home to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. For all the students of the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre, it is essential to understand the unique blessing of our current location. The Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Goombungee, Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, is a place where Namo Amituofo truly abides. Because of this sacred presence, our centre serves as a direct gateway and a point of connection to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss.
Through the power of Namo Amituofo and the spiritual vision of Practitioner Su, many inconceivable events occur here. When Practitioner Su opens up space to communicate with the Buddha or to invite spirits to receive the , it becomes clear to the outside world that this centre is a place of pure goodness and a precious land for those seeking to return to the West. It is a sanctuary where the light of the Buddha shines brightly, guiding all beings toward their true home.
Returning to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss is the deepest aspiration of countless beings. However, you must realise that this is a task that requires your full attention while you still possess a human body. Whether you are a lay practitioner or a monastic, you must engage in diligent practice. You must prepare for the great event of your own rebirth in the Western Land. This preparation is the only way to achieve true liberation from the cycle of birth, aging, sickness, death.
This is a matter of the utmost importance. You must have a physical body to perform the necessary work of purification and cultivation. Spirits who no longer have a physical body exist in a different dimension; because they lack a physical form, they are often unable to perform the necessary practice to prepare for their own rebirth. They are limited by their state, which is why it is so vital for you to act now, while you still have the opportunity.
Some people mistakenly believe they can leave the responsibility of their rebirth to others. They might hope that their fellow practitioners, their children, or their younger relatives will handle the arrangements for them after they pass away. This is an extremely dangerous way of thinking. Imagine a person who is drowning in the middle of the ocean; to rely entirely on the hope that someone else will happen to notice them and pull them to safety is a gamble with impossible odds. It is far too risky to entrust your ultimate destiny to the actions of others.
How, then, should you prepare for your return to the Western Land? The method is simple yet profound:
You should strive to chant Namo Amituofo 24/7. Let each thought follow the previous one without interruption. Practise until you reach a state where you are chanting, yet there is no sense of a chanter; you are in a state of 'chanting without chanting, and no-chanting while chanting.' By cultivating these skills in your daily life, you will be able to face the uncertainty of life and the moment of death with complete calm. Your mind will remain clear and undisturbed by external conditions. Because you have maintained your focus, you will be able to chant Namo Amituofo with a sincere heart, calling the Buddha to come and guide you to the West.
For those who reach an even higher level of practice, you may be able to know the time of your passing in advance. This means that Namo Amituofo will manifest before you to inform you of the exact day and time of your departure. This is a most auspicious sign of your successful rebirth. If you can attain the freedom to travel back and forth to the Western Land through your , your practice has reached a supreme level. This is the ultimate guarantee of your rebirth and a concrete manifestation of your ability to save yourself and others. Namo Amituofo.
