Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju, recorded by the chief writer, Venerable HaiZe.
The most vital lesson in any practitioner's life is to recognise one's true self. Only by looking inward with clarity and sincerity can we realise our true nature and return to our original, authentic state. This process of self-recognition is the foundation upon which all spiritual progress is built.
How does one truly recognise oneself? It is essential that you do not underestimate your own potential. Every single being possesses the inherent capacity of the true self. The only difference between those who are awakened and those who are not is whether they have had the opportunity to learn of this truth. When you are fortunate enough to encounter the teachings of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas, and when you are guided by a true spiritual friend, you can begin the journey of diligent practice. Through this practice, you will realise your true nature and successfully find your way back to your authentic self.
However, while you must not underestimate yourself, you must also be careful not to overvalue your ego. If you inflate your sense of self, you will inevitably become arrogant and subjective. When you become attached to your own views, believing that your perspective is the only correct one, you will stubbornly follow your own path. In doing so, you will fail to see that you are drifting further and further away from your true self. Whether you are currently leaning toward self-doubt or toward the trap of arrogance, you must strive to recognise your true state. Only by achieving this clarity can you continue to advance on the path of practice.
Once you have recognised your true self, you must be willing to change your ways and adjust your heart and actions. This is a continuous process of refinement:
By following the teachings of , our Teacher, and Practitioner Su, you can correct your past errors in perspective and understanding. You must address the negative habits and personality traits that have long hindered your growth. As you purify your thoughts and actions, you will find yourself coming into sync with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. This alignment is the prerequisite for realising your true nature.
When you have successfully transformed your heart and actions, you become a true practitioner of the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. From this state of clarity, you will be able to act with righteousness, teaching beings without bias or partiality. Your life will become a testament to the Buddha's teachings, ensuring that the and the holy name of Namo Amituofo are passed down and continue to flourish throughout the Dharma Realm. May you always remain steadfast in your practice, never ceasing in your efforts to save infinite suffering beings.
