Living Water: The Source of Spiritual Purification

The Stagnation of the Heart

Living water acts as a spiritual cleanser, washing away the accumulated impurities that cloud our hearts. Over time, layers of dust and defilements settle upon our minds, making it difficult to see our true nature clearly. In the midst of our suffering, we often fail to realise that these impurities are already present, acting as a barrier to our peace. When we continue to add further suffering upon these existing impurities, how can we ever hope to find true purity? We must recognise that our hearts have become stagnant, burdened by the weight of our past actions and misconceptions.

The Arrival of the Living Water

Fortunately, the Great Dharma has appeared before our eyes. We hear the resonant sound of the Buddha-name of the Western Pure Land. Each repetition of this sacred name flows into our ears and nourishes our hearts. We see the true spiritual friend before us, delivering lectures and sharing the Dharma, allowing the sound of the Truth to spread throughout the world. Where does this living water come from? It originates from the state of Awakening, where the heart is free from all obstacles. It is a luminous, transparent, and clear water that washes away the immeasurable filth of our body, mind, and spirit.

The Many Forms of Spiritual Nourishment

Living water is not a singular thing; it manifests in many ways to support our journey toward enlightenment. It can appear in the following forms:

• A single sentence of wisdom or a verse from the sutras that touches your heart.
• A simple expression, a gesture, or an action observed during our daily interactions.
• The profound lessons we learn through our exchanges with others.
• The guidance provided by our true spiritual friends and teachers, who offer their experience through both their words and their conduct.

Furthermore, we can receive this living water through our dedicated practice. When we recite the sutras or perform prostrations, we are bathed in the Buddha’s light. Through the act of listening to the Dharma and contemplating the teachings, we gain moments of sudden realisation and receive a surge of positive energy that sustains our practice.

Awakening to the Ever-Present Grace

This living water is always present, surrounding the fourfold assembly at Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. It exists at every moment, waiting for us to notice it. We must cultivate a sense of awareness and be ready to awaken. When we are mindful, we can perceive this grace in every aspect of our lives. By staying connected to the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way, we ensure that the living water continues to flow, keeping our hearts clear and our path toward the Western Pure Land unobstructed. Let us cherish these opportunities for purification and continue to move forward with a sincere and dedicated heart.
