Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju offers these teachings:
As long as you have a single breath remaining, it is never too late to turn your life around. You must seize the present moment to engage in diligent practice.
Diligence is not merely a concept; it is the heartbeat of your daily life. It is not limited to the formal acts of prostrations, chanting , or reciting the Sutras, although these are essential foundations. True diligent practice must permeate every aspect of your existence. It must be reflected in your thoughts, your attitudes, your words, and your actions. You must ensure that every movement of your mind and body aligns with the and the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way.
You must be willing to change your ways immediately. Whenever you become aware of an impropriety in your Body, Speech, and Mind, you must address it without delay. Whether you are an adult or a child, you must be mindful of your presence in the temple. For instance, speaking aloud during the Noon Offering or while in the Buddha Hall disrupts the quietude of the space. Such actions cause interference with the quiet retreats of others and hinder their ability to focus on their practice. We must strive to maintain the sanctity of our environment at all times.
We must also be careful with how we interact with one another. Shouting, laughing loudly, or displaying anger when someone else makes a mistake only serves to create negative causes. When you see a fault in another, do not resort to harsh scolding or unkind words. Instead, offer your guidance through gentle, constructive suggestions. Remember that the practice of the Buddha's path requires us to be cautious in our speech. Speak less, for fewer words lead to fewer mistakes. When you speak too much, you inevitably create more errors. Instead, fill your mind and your voice with the name of Namo Amituofo.
Often, we find ourselves trapped in a cycle of suffering because we see the faults of others so clearly. We focus on their shortcomings, which stirs up afflictions within our own hearts. Yet, in our preoccupation with them, we fail to see our own problems. This is how we inadvertently create negative causes. If you continue to practise in this way, not only will you find it difficult to make progress, but you will also find it impossible to transform or reach the state of an awakened being.
It is never too late to change. When you see your own faults, correct them immediately. Do not dwell on the faults of others, for this is the only way to maintain a pure heart. By doing so, you will find the path to peace and the fulfillment of your vows. Let us all strive to be mindful, to be kind, and to keep our focus on the path of liberation.
