Understanding Namo Amituofo and the Forty-eight Great Vows
The Pure Land Gate is a path of dual power. It relies on the harmonious interaction between your own and the compassionate power of the Buddha. Only when these two forces are united can you truly achieve success in your practice. In this current age of the Dharma’s decline, all beings are burdened by heavy . Even if you possess a strong vow to attain liberation, you may find it impossible to overcome the weight of your past actions through your own strength alone.
This is why the Buddha’s power is so vital. When you engage in your basic daily lessons—such as performing prostrations, chanting the name of , and reciting the Sutras—you are manifesting your own self-power. It is precisely at this moment of sincere effort that the Buddha’s power can provide its . These blessings help you increase the positive energy within your body, mind, and spirit. Furthermore, the Buddha’s light shines upon you, leading those who wish to enter into that light and helping you to diminish your spiritual obstacles.
The Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Goombungee, Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, is a place where Namo Amituofo truly abides. As a member of this community, you are fortunate to receive the all-encompassing illumination of Namo Amituofo’s light. You are also under the constant care and guidance of your teachers and Practitioner Su. Because of this, you are always dwelling within the embrace of the Buddha’s power.
However, for those who are walking the path of the Bodhisattvas, or for those who seek the one-vehicle path to Buddhahood, there is a fundamental truth you must realise: the methods to resolve your and eliminate your spiritual obstacles must be initiated by your own self-power. You cannot rely solely on the Buddha’s blessings to achieve this. The Buddha can guide and support you, but the work of transformation must come from within.
This initiation of self-power means that you must exert your own individual effort. No one can perform your prostrations for you. No one can chant the name of Namo Amituofo on your behalf, and no one can recite the Sutras in your place. In the practice of the Dharma, there is a saying: each person who practises gains the benefit for themselves. No one can take your place in achieving or attaining Buddhahood. Therefore, your own individual effort is of the utmost importance.
Do not allow yourself to be swayed or influenced by others when deciding whether you truly wish to seek Awakening. Your commitment must be your own. The fact that you are gathered here today at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre is not a coincidence. It is the result of the merits and virtues you have accumulated over your past lives. You have spent countless lifetimes cultivating wisdom and virtue, and you have made the great vow to attain Buddhahood and save the world. It is because of these past vows that you have the opportunity to practise here today.
Do not let the desires of the physical body or your fleeting personal emotions cause you to retreat from your vow to attain Awakening and Buddhahood. You must have faith in the Buddha, and you must also have faith in yourself. By making the great vow to save all beings and realise your true nature, and by combining your own diligent practice with the Buddha’s blessings, you will have the opportunity to fulfil your wish and attain Buddhahood. Stay focused, remain diligent, and continue your practice with a sincere heart.
