Understanding Namo Amituofo and the Forty-eight Great Vows
These teachings were recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe, on the tenth of March, 2023. In this discourse, Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju offers a profound reflection on the relationship between the heavens, the Buddha's grace, and the salvation of all spirits.
The grace of the heavens protects all living creatures, allowing them to find peace along their respective paths. When each being fulfils its duty without causing harm to others, the winds and rains arrive in their proper seasons, the hearts of the people remain calm, and the nation prospers, ensuring the safety and well-being of all civilians. This is the natural order of a world in balance.
However, the world is rarely without its flaws. Wherever there is injury, there is suffering; wherever there is injustice, there is hardship. As the hearts of people rise and fall with the changing tides of fortune, they find themselves caught in the midst of turbulent storms. In such times, the spirit becomes scattered, unable to find a moment of stillness or unity. Even the deities and spirits of the heavenly realms find it difficult to reverse this decline. As the cries of suffering sentient beings rise from every corner of the world, one must ask: who can truly come to their rescue?
It is within this absolute despair that a golden light appears. This is the light of , brought forth through the work of Practitioner Su. By chanting the Buddha's name, one can resolve the difficulties of life and alleviate the suffering of . Through the practice of chanting, one may behold the Buddha, enter the golden light, and journey to the of Ultimate Bliss. This is the path to saving all sentient beings and guiding them toward rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Even the deities and spirits of the heavenly realms are included in this salvation; thus, the heavens offer their gratitude for the Buddha's grace in saving all living spirits.
We must learn to let go of the ego-driven struggles that plague our lives. You must stop competing to be superior or inferior. You must cease your attachment to having more or less. You must stop fighting over what is right and what is wrong. These attachments only serve to invite layer upon layer of suffering into your life. In the eyes of the Buddha, there is no high or low, no more or less; all are equal. When you transcend these dualities, you align yourself with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way.
The merit and virtue of the Buddha-name are truly inconceivable. It is a power that can bring rain to end a drought and resolve the most desperate of circumstances. By taking on the suffering of others, the Buddha helps all beings leave suffering behind. Through the , the work of extends without boundaries, reaching every corner of existence. The heavens themselves offer gratitude for this inconceivable grace. Namo Amituofo.
