This is a record of an interview with the late Taiwanese actor Shih Ying (born Lin Chung-ping), who sought deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. He now resides in the . This account reflects upon his life and his journey through the realms of suffering. Recorded by the chief writer, Fa Ning, on May 30, 2026.
Shih Ying speaks:
". I am Shih Ying. Right now, I feel an overwhelming sense of —I am truly, deeply happy! I never imagined that it would finally be over. When I speak of 'it,' I am referring to the nightmare, the endless, agonising days I spent suffering in the hells. I wonder what you might think now that you know I, Shih Ying, fell into the hells? I feel it is a deeply shameful thing to admit. But it must be said. I want you all to use my story as a mirror, and I want you to know that I am safe now. I have arrived at a pure Buddha-land called the Western -Nature Land.
My family back in the human world has likely never heard of this place—the Western Dharma-Nature Land, right? But you must have heard of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, haven't you? And surely, you are all familiar with the sacred name, 'Namo Amituofo'."
"I want to explain to my family first: the Western Dharma-Nature Land is a spiritual Buddha-land established jointly by Namo Amituofo and a being who has realised their true nature, known in the human world as Practitioner Su. Today, your father, your husband, I, Shih Ying, am sitting peacefully here on a lotus flower, feeling such immense, boundless joy.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su. I have been here for a few days now, and I have not yet fully opened my heart to express my thanks to the Buddha. This is something I never thought could happen. When I first arrived, it took me some time to calm down, to confirm that I was truly safe, and to understand what all of this around me really was.
Oh, heavens! Think back to when I passed away. I was quickly brought before King Yama for judgment. He told me that because I had been an actor in my life, the dramas I performed had disturbed people's minds and led them toward unwholesome thoughts. I was an actor who caused people's hearts to turn dark and twisted, so I was naturally sent to the heart-gouging hell. That hell is absolutely terrifying! There were beings constantly digging my heart out, causing me to die in agony, only to be revived again, waking up in the wind. My spiritual body would seem to heal, only for my heart to be ripped out once more. This cycle of suffering was relentless; it never stopped. My whole body was covered in blood. My heart hurt so much—it was an unbearable, searing pain that consumed my entire being."
"When I first arrived in the Western Dharma-Nature Land, I could not adapt. I kept touching my own chest, wondering how everything had suddenly become so peaceful and sound. Although I was still traumatised, under the purification of Namo Amituofo’s Buddha-light in this pure Buddha-land, I gradually began to heal. I calmed down, and only then did I slowly realise that I had truly been saved by the Buddha.
Oh, who would have expected this? It turns out that every single bit of cause and effect from my life was recorded. I called myself a Buddhist while I was alive, but I did not understand the Buddha’s teachings at all. I poured my entire life into my career as an actor. People say that life is like a play and a play is like life; I performed with such dedication that I ended up sacrificing my entire existence to the drama, only to face such bitter retribution. Oh, the suffering! It was so bitter!
The older generation, especially those over sixty or seventy, probably have some impression of me. You all loved watching television dramas, especially those long, drawn-out series. I performed in one series after another, and my image was considered quite likeable. No matter what kind of role I played, people would remember my face. But as for whether they remembered my name, that is hard to say. I never considered myself a very famous actor.
Regardless, after experiencing such a life, I no longer hold onto anything from my past. Those bygone events do not make me feel particularly burdened, anxious, or attached. Because the Western Dharma-Nature Land is a place of purification—a place where there is nothing, where it is empty, and where there is only the one Buddha-name!"
"I am the same now. I am truly empty here, chanting Namo Amituofo all the way. Although I have only been here for three days, I am already completely different from who I was before. It turns out that spiritual growth can happen so quickly. I have even begun to look forward to my future rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Although I know I do not yet have the capacity for that and dare not think too much about it, I chant the Buddha's name every day. Isn't that why I am here? Isn't it to tell the world about this truly perfect path?
My family, you should be happy for me now. Please do not hold onto anything I did while I was alive. Whether I did well or poorly, I dare not even look back on it. After going through the hells, I have come to understand deeply that everything in this world is an illusion. Before the final truth is revealed, no one should take life lightly. Otherwise, there is only endless suffering and regret.
When I received my judgment, I was in such extreme agony. Watching myself being sent to the hells was a torment that was impossible to endure. I realised that the karma I created as an actor was immense. How many people watched my performances? How many heard the words I spoke in those roles? Every single one of those instances did not conform to the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way taught by the Buddha. Since it did not conform, suffering was the natural result. No one can escape it; I know this to be true."
"Therefore, in these few days in the Western Dharma-Nature Land, I have firmly grasped every single second to learn from the Buddha. There is no more pain, only boundless, endless Dharma-joy. I am no longer that character from the television dramas; I am the real Lin Chung-ping. I have settled here as a spirit, and I no longer need to perform in front of a screen to bring 'joy' to others.
Now, I only want to sincerely bring this Dharma-joy to my family. I have a wife, a daughter, and a son who are still in the human world, and they still feel such deep attachment to me. And my grandchild—such a lovely child. I want to say I am sorry to them. I could not stay with them for long, and I did not raise my children well. I did not give them a true Buddhist education to help them understand what the Right Way is.
Especially my daughter, who is also an actor—I sincerely hope she can see this interview. I hope she knows to turn back and stop being an actor! No matter how well you perform, it is all an illusion. No matter how much money you earn, it is all a deception. It is enough to have what you need; be content. Look at me—your father sacrificed his life after death for the sake of the acting path. No one wants to suffer in the hells. How could people in the world possibly understand that kind of hellish suffering? In our daily lives, we feel pain if we are cut by a knife or if we lose a small finger, and we think it is unbearable. Imagine what it is like for me, having my heart dug out every single moment in the hells.
Heavens, I do not want to recall it. I hope you can see what I have said and understand what I am trying to express. And if you could learn about the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Australia, that would be the best thing possible.
Do you know that the Buddha is not just in the distant heavens, but is truly right before your eyes? If you could make a trip to Australia, to the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Goombungee, Toowoomba, Queensland, you would know where I am residing spiritually. You could come here and speak with me. I hope my family will consider this. I will be here waiting for you to find me.
Take an opportunity to calm your heart and spend some time in this place to cultivate your character; that would be wonderful. Of course, what I hope for even more is that you can learn the true Buddhist education and understand the importance of changing your ways. Only then will you not have wasted your life in the human world.
Alright, I will not ramble on anymore. I hope you will all use my life story as a mirror and not follow in my footsteps. You must not be stubborn, you must not have a selfish heart, and you must not have such a massive 'ego.' If you do this, you will not end up taking the path I took to the hells.
Thank you all. Thank you, Namo Amituofo. Thank you, Practitioner Su, for giving me the chance to be reborn. I am so, so grateful.
