Understanding Namo Amituofo and the Forty-eight Great Vows
When a child is young and still in the process of learning about the world, parents must dedicate significant time and effort to their upbringing. This guidance is essential for shaping the child's character and future. Parents teach their children to cultivate a positive mindset and to hold correct views about life. They instil in them the importance of being:
Parents do this with the heartfelt hope that when their children eventually grow up and must face the world on their own, they will be upright individuals who can contribute meaningfully to society.
The journey of spiritual practice is remarkably similar to the growth of a child. Before one attains the state of an awakened being, one is still in a stage of development. During this time, it is vital that you stay closely connected to the Buddha, Bodhisattvas, your Teacher, and your true spiritual friends. You must remain by their side, learning from them at every opportunity and acting in accordance with their teachings and guidance.
By keeping this close proximity, you avoid the pitfalls of developing incorrect mental notes or engaging in harmful behaviours. Instead, you are able to walk firmly upon the righteous path, ensuring that you do not stray into confusion or wrong views. This is how you gradually align your own understanding with the wisdom of the Buddha, eventually entering into the Buddha's own knowledge and vision.
The path of practice is one of continuous growth, step by step. Throughout this journey, you must continue to follow the guidance of the Buddha, Bodhisattvas, and your Teacher. When you encounter difficulties, you will find solutions; when you are faced with confusion, you will find clarity. Through this process of diligent practice and constant chanting of the Buddha's name, you will eventually reach the moment of purification and the state of an awakened being.
