Regardless of how others treat you, what they say about you, or how they perceive you, you must strive to maintain a steady and peaceful heart. Your response to the world around you defines your spiritual progress. Consider these three ways to handle the interactions you encounter daily:
Do not let good things weigh upon your heart, and certainly do not let bad things linger there either. Whether an experience was pleasant or painful, it is already in the past. How others treat you is their own affair; you must ensure that you never treat others with disrespect or seek to take advantage of them. Instead, you should always offer kind words and a gentle countenance. Treat everyone you meet with courtesy, and strive to see the Buddha in every being you encounter.
Serving all beings is your natural duty as a practitioner. Do not shy away from doing more, for the more you give, the more you gain in spiritual merit. This selfless service is the perfect way to nurture your , cultivate your heart, and refine your virtue. When you serve others without expectation, you are truly walking the path of the .
Do not let the trivial details of the past weigh upon your heart. Whether you had much or little, whether things went well or poorly, it has all passed. Do not dwell on what has already occurred. Live in the present, for this is the only time that truly exists. When your heart is free of these trivial burdens, you are well-positioned to become an awakened being. If you allow these trifles to accumulate in your heart, you will find that becoming an awakened being remains far away. .
