In the Midst of the Suffering of the Saha World, Only Fragrant Light is a Ray of Hope
People in this world often enjoy offering blessings to one another, and they are equally fond of receiving such well-wishes. While these words of blessing may sound pleasant and appropriate for the occasion, we must ask ourselves if they hold any true weight. If one does not walk the path with steady, grounded steps, these blessings remain nothing more than empty illusions. They are merely words spoken by the mouth, lines written by the pen, or fleeting topics of conversation shared over tea. Without the substance of genuine practice, they carry no power to transform our lives.
How is your future? This is a question you must ask yourself. It is not something to be left to chance or the hopes of others. To understand the direction of your life, you must look deeply into your own conduct:
Furthermore, consider the state of your character. Do you understand the importance of being humble and modest, or do you still harbour arrogance? Do you know how to reflect upon yourself, acknowledging your own shortcomings, or do you still look upon others with judgment, seeing only their faults while speaking of their errors?
Where, then, does the future truly reside? It is not in some distant time or external circumstance. The future is found in the present moment. It is rooted in your own character, your own actions, and your own thoughts. If you do not put these teachings into actual practice, all the blessings you receive can only rely on the laws of and cause and effect. You are then left to wonder whether your fate holds the outcomes you desire. If your past karma dictates that you should have these things, the blessings may seem to come true; if your karma does not support them, the blessings will inevitably come to nothing.
However, if you engage in diligent practice—and if you do so with strength and sincerity—you create the conditions necessary to make those blessings a reality. For the practitioner, the question of what the future holds is entirely dependent on one thing: your ability to work hard at your diligent practice to realise your true self. Only when you have successfully returned to your true self will you have the opportunity to spread the teachings and save beings, guiding them toward rebirth in the Western Pure Land. This is the only way to ensure that your future is one of light, wisdom, and ultimate liberation.
