Understanding Namo Amituofo and the Forty-eight Great Vows
On the twenty-ninth of August, 2017, the disciple Shi Faxi prostrated before with a sincere and earnest heart. The disciple humbly requested that Namo Amituofo provide teachings regarding the infinitely layered Demon Realm. Furthermore, the disciple sought guidance on how one might correct a mind that has become polluted and astray, helping it return to its original, pure, and untainted state.
Namo Amituofo responded with profound wisdom, explaining that our original nature is inherently pure, clear, and transparent. However, the world is filled with endless layers of complexity. When demonic desires arise, they manifest like dark, tangled branches in the mind, creating a cold and destructive wind that blows incessantly. In this modern age, even the youngest among us are easily influenced. Their innocent hearts are often stained by the distractions of technology and worldly entertainment, causing their spirits to lose their natural clarity. The world is filled with many things that corrupt the spirit and harm the people, and it is truly a great tragedy to see the hearts of the young become so clouded.
We live in a vast ocean of , where the mountains of our past transgressions seem to rise ever higher. How can we possibly find clarity in such a corrupt world? The answer lies in the example of the lotus flower. Just as the lotus rises from the muddy water without being stained by the mire, we must learn to remain pure. We must stand straight and upright, maintaining a noble character that is not swayed by the world. If we allow our hearts to crave what the demons crave, we become no different from them. We must remain unmoved by external temptations.
It is important to understand that demons are not inherently evil; their hearts were originally good. They have simply gone astray, and because of this, it is difficult for them to turn back. However, if they can truly repent, the gate of the Buddha is always open to welcome them home. By choosing to repent, one can attain supreme wisdom and eventually achieve Buddhahood. When you return to the right path and commit yourself to the long journey of purification, your voyage will be smooth and unobstructed. You must always look toward the light of the . In your daily practice, you will find that when your heart is aligned with the truth, all things become unobstructed.
The obstacles you face today are, in reality, manifestations of your own mind. These are not external forces acting upon you, but reflections of your own internal state. When you realise that your mind is the creator of these experiences, you gain the power to adjust your course. If you find yourself acting in ways that are not aligned with the truth, you must gently adjust your heart. This is not a sign of failure, but an opportunity to see things through the lens of goodness. When you see the goodness in all things, you are seeing the projection of your own pure heart. This is the path of great compassion, and it is how you will find true freedom. You need not be pressured by external circumstances; instead, rely on the power of great compassion to transform your inner world. By observing your own mind in this way, you will find that every step of your journey becomes a marvellous expression of the truth.
When you reach a state of absolute openness, you will understand that there is no need to be entangled in suffering. Your spirit is naturally bright and knowing. When you are free from attachment to objects, you will perceive your original nature. You will be able to see the hearts of all beings, and your own heart will dwell in true equality. In this state, the influence of the demons will naturally subside. What we call the dust of the demons is merely a distraction. To all my fellow practitioners, I say this: do not look for faults in others. Instead, focus on seeing goodness, speaking of goodness, and acting with goodness. This will lead to the highest form of harmony. When you are constantly diligent in your practice, that is the true expression of compassion. This is how you will attain the Buddha’s path, bringing to all beings and realising that your heart is truly free and unobstructed. With this awakened wisdom, you will see others clearly, and your mind will be as cool and refreshing as the deepest stillness. This is the wondrous transformation of the lotus, as precious and brilliant as a jewel in meditation.
