Venerable Kuanxin, a monastic who previously resided at the Academy, attained rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This message, recorded on October 27, 2019, was transmitted from the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss to the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Australia, where it was transcribed by Venerable HaiZe. In this letter, Venerable Kuanxin addresses Venerable Wuzhuang, sharing insights on the spiritual achievements of Practitioner Su and the importance of unity within the Pure Land community.
Venerable Kuanxin speaks:
". Compassionate Venerable Wuzhuang, this is Kuanxin.
Venerable Wuzhuang, you must be quite startled—how could it be Kuanxin? Did Kuanxin not pass away? Yes, Venerable, that is true. I am currently in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, transmitting this message to Practitioner Su at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. I convey my mental notes to the monastics there, who then transcribe them into the text you see before you. This is something that happens quite often at Practitioner Su's centre.
A Journey Beyond the Human Realm
Venerable Wuzhuang, I was quite foolish and slow-witted in my time on earth. I am deeply grateful that you were willing to accept me, for it was only through your acceptance that I had the opportunity to follow the teachings of our Venerable Master Chin Kung, to study the practice of chanting Namo Amituofo, and eventually reach the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. It was Practitioner Su who brought me here. This is the absolute truth—it is not a fabrication. Just as Practitioner Su brought Venerable Wufan to the West, he did the same for me.
This is not Practitioner Su engaging in supernatural powers for show. It is the natural capability that arises when a practitioner’s meditative concentration reaches a high level of achievement, even to the point of awakened being. As described in the Infinite Life Sutra, these abilities—the heavenly eye, the ability to read minds, and the divine foot—are entirely natural. Every being in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss possesses such abilities; it is only in the human world that they are rarely seen. Because so few people in the past achieved this, Practitioner Su’s abilities are often misunderstood by others. People do not believe such things are possible, and they even distance themselves from him. It is truly a great pity! All of us spirits who have been guided to the West by Practitioner Su feel a deep sense of injustice on his behalf.
The Reality of Spiritual Deliverance
Even if there are others who, like Practitioner Su, aspire to send beings to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, can they truly succeed? Can they, like Practitioner Su, travel freely between the worlds to guide beings back, according to their and strength? Even among those who chant Namo Amituofo, how many can be certain of their own rebirth? Furthermore, when one is distracted by delusions and a scattered mind during the chanting for the deceased, how can they possibly reach the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss?
Venerable Wuzhuang, you know that I speak plainly because I do not know how to be subtle. Yet, everyone has been so kind to me. Even when my words were not fluent or were difficult to understand, no one held it against me, for they knew my mind was not very sharp. I am truly grateful for the tolerance and care shown to me by you, the senior monastics, the fellow practitioners, and the lay volunteers at the academy. Although I passed away early and many felt sad, the fact that I have reached the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss makes that early departure entirely worthwhile!
Gratitude and the Path Forward
I am truly blessed to have known you, Venerable Wuzhuang, and Practitioner Su. It is my sincere hope that you, along with all the senior practitioners, monastics, and volunteers of the Pure Land school, will all attain rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Having Practitioner Su guide you to the West provides even greater assurance. Whether through the or his daily, uninterrupted sessions, Practitioner Su has already sent countless, immeasurable beings to the West. This is the truth. I cannot tell lies, for I am now a resident of the West, and here, my mind is much clearer. I understand many truths and the laws of and cause and effect. In truth, I was a monastic in my past life, but because I was stingy with the , I suffered the retribution of a dull mind. However, Namo Amituofo is compassionate. Because my good roots and were deep, I was able to encounter the Pure Land teachings once more, and Practitioner Su was able to bring me back to my Western home without letting me suffer too much in the human world.
A Call for Unity
In the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, everyone refers to Practitioner Su as 'Buddha Su,' because he acts just like Namo Amituofo, guiding beings with karmic affinity back to the West. Venerable Wuzhuang, now that Practitioner Su possesses these skills, I truly hope they can be passed down to save even more beings. If he were to pass away now, it would be a tremendous loss to have such skills cut off! That is why he cannot pass away yet; the Buddha has entrusted him with a vital mission. We all hope that the monastics currently at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre will practise diligently. They are truly like lotus flowers blooming in the muddy, turbulent waters of the human world; even we enjoy watching them.
Venerable Wuzhuang, Practitioner Su is truly a good person. He is approachable, helps suffering beings according to their conditions, and teaches them how to attain rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. His respect for our Venerable Master Chin Kung, for you, and for the other senior practitioners and volunteers has never wavered. You are a good person, and so are many of the senior practitioners and volunteers in the Pure Land community. Kuanxin truly hopes that the Pure Land community and you, Venerable Wuzhuang, will not misunderstand Practitioner Su. I hope you can join hands with him to help more people who chant Namo Amituofo and more suffering beings practise to attain rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Let us all join the ranks of those saving the world through the Pure Land! I believe the compassionate Namo Amituofo hopes for this as well.
